I’ve been interested in collecting some aesthetically pleasing knives, but don’t know where to start! Love that I’m seeing this in a watch forum

Plenty of up and coming custom knife makers to satisfy your interest.

But yes….

Hard to go wrong with a Chris Reeves Knives Sebenza. Pretty classic from an aesthetic perspective, lots of CRK options to "dress up" the look, different handle inlays, blade types etc

And you only need to wait for 4-6 years for delivery. 😵‍💫
Waiting patiently……..

Barry Dawson, ca mid 1980s linen micarta liner-lock folder. Blade and liners are 440c stainless, 3-3/4 edge, 5" closed, just shy of 7oz.

Barry made very few folders and this was made back when he was doing all of the knife-making himself, long before the family joined in.

I got this Cammilus "Silver Sword" sometime in the early 80s. You can see it has been well-loved over the years.

The dimples on the blade? When I worked for Unversity of Wisconsin---Milwaukee, I was in the Electronics Shop and knew the guys in the Machine Shop down the hall. They had a Rockwell tester. Each measuremennt was above Rockwell C 45. Not terribly bad.

I was going to visit my sister for spring break 1993. Woke up still drunk and ran to the bus stop to get to the airport. Woops, knife in my back pocket.

Leaving Phoenix on the way back, that knife was inspected pretty closely. It was shorter by 1/8" from illegal. Whew!

Won't do that today. 😀

Finished another…Full resin handles….
Got to learn to take better photos before I give them to their new owners. Though had to rush this one as buyer was at the end of his 6 month placement in Australia.

Next is 2 commissions for a forum member.
He has chosen Japanese blades and steel that are way above my skill level…Blue #2 steel Kurouchi Petty knife….so it’s half done already…😁 But these will get some special handles with some special wood.

Ha ha, I remember when I was a teenager way way back when you could greet incoming travelers as they came directly off the plane in the terminals at LAX. Much to the chagrin of my mother I discovered that I had my Buck Folding Hunter tucked in my pocket. Fortunately the screener held onto for it for me and gave it back upon leaving. No doubt it would have been a bit different if we were flying out that day.

Few years ago I was heading out on a helicopter to clear a oil rig coming into the country. Lost a lighter as I still smoked then and the security guard that had to take it ,who I knew said it’s OK as he will be there when I get back.
Got back and he said “pick a bag” as there was 5-6 shopping bags on the floor in he’s office.
The bag had about 50+ lighters 4 Leatherman,s and a handful of pocket knives, heap of Swiss Army knives and several pairs of scissors. Mentioned that they average about 3-4 bags a week and have for many years… So could just imagine how many a airport would have. Grabbed a handful of lighters

Do remember seeing a table once at Sydney airport of all the sinister things that people tried to take on a plane just in a month….😲

People in Austin, TX, are lucky to have the Texas State Surplus store. All the confiscated (legal) material in Texas state airports goes here to be re-sold. THOUSANDS of knives priced to sell. I go there once a month. One of my favorite finds was a Leatherman with "MENSA" engraved on it. Perfect!

Bought a knife to support a Ukraine knife maker….
He had to sell his workshop gear as couldn’t afford rent on the workshop whilst he was fighting… Seeing his Instagram page go from making knives to fighting in a war is sobering.
@piranha_knives
(happy to support a fellow knife maker and threw a few $$s more in for him. Funny as he was excited to send a knife to Australia)

How'd that work? His site is in Ukrainian and I didn't see the purchase process. (I don't have Facebook but do have IG).

He looks like such a kid. Screwed up situation. Good on you for supporting him.

Hey folks,

I am not a knife collector but thought you may know the answer to my question. Among the many small items I saved that once belonged to my late father, this whetstone has followed me around since the time he passed away in the late 1980's.

I have no clue what year it might be from. Any guesses?

In any case - and no, this isn't a ruse to garner interest from you lot! - I've recently popped it up on eBay as it's time to move some of these items along to those who might benefit from them (the linen-dialed Gruen and GP I sometimes post on WRUW will remain, of course!). Any ideas of age are greatly appreciated. I simply wanted to add a date to the listing to perhaps entice any interested eBayers.

Thanks so much!

That leather pouch says 1950s maybe late 40s to me.

I think simply saying "vintage" in your listing would suffice.

My dual grit big brother says hello.

@mydeafcat Good old wet stone…. sorry but of little value. Looks like it’s been well used for years 👍

Probably a bit out of favour in today’s fandangled diamond, ceramic and Japanese natural stone world.

But they still work…and there is nothing wrong with them.

The small ones are handy but I would probably have 5-6 of them that were put in with knifes as a token extra and some knife companies give you one with every purchase.
