‘Best watches’ will be subjective here. Most expensive? Rare? Etc. I reckon any that fall in those categories won’t join owners on rides.

None of my watches approach 5 figures in value, say, yet the few I have that I consider my ‘best’ don’t get out on my rides with one exception: my 2254.50 Seamaster. It’s on a bracelet and it’s accompanied me on many spins. My Speedmaster, along with other favourite watches, is on a leather strap. That means no sweating. They stay home.

But my 1990 Tag Heuer 1000 is now my beater and it’s my go-to for exercise, i.e. gym, road rides etc. I’ve never lost a watch on a ride. Should I forget a watch, a couple presses on my Garmin shows me the time!

My KonTiki 20 is my go to activity watch now. It replaced my old Hamilton Perry because of its shock protection and water resistance.

I certainly have done in the days pre-bike computer, but now if I want to have a watch at the destination I'll put into rack bag and get it out when off the bike.

Although not my best watch I should not have worn this because the old bracelet was about to let go -- but when it actually did the watch was under a fleece with an elasticated cuff which luckily held it.

My sincere advice would be never wear a good watch on a bike. It is the first thing to hit the ground. And I have seen 3 nice watches smashed up in crashes. Plus heard of one Daytona lost on a ride when a spring bar failed.

why risk it?

I wouldn’t wear any watch out cycling, least of all my best. Nothing other than full INEOS kit spells mid-life-crisis more when you’re in the saddle. Garmin owns the cyclist’s timekeeping, and rightly so.

Don’t really get this thread unless the fella needs some posts. Hope I’m wrong.

Anyway my 2c here: I do ride road bike, wearing Garmin watch just to know what time is it because my Garmin cycling computer screen is full of all other “necessary” data. Never ever had an automatic watch on my wrist while riding a bike. And I can’t imagine the reason I should wear one.

Former road racer/time trialist and currently a recreational rider.

Since becoming a recreational rider, I don’t wear my best watch but my bike will often wear my modern 1861 Moonwatch. It’s most certainly a risk that I’m willing to accept…but I enjoy having a mechanical cycling computer that simply keeps track of seat time and time of day. I have not lost [or damaged] a watch while out riding…yet.

Bicycle is pretty ideal Apple Watch use case, there’s a Strava companion app that adds your heart rate data to the app, navigation via haptic taps, all kinds of useful information and durability / scratch resistance. Comfortable and sweatproof on the rubber strap too.

I ride a lot, but never with a watch. I might crash, vibration is not great for the movement, and its uncomfortable with gloves. I for one enjoy not worrying about the time when I'm on my bike.

My cycling computer displays the time, so no. I wear my SMPc while sea kayaking, though.

On longer rides I do not, but for my shorter, around the town rides, I wear whatever watch I have on that day.

Tangentially, I always wear a Seiko beater whenever I’m water skiing or working on my boat. That lesson was learned the hard way. Once when I was changing out the water pump my friends who were waiting for me to finish, suggested I remove my watch for the repair. I set it on the dash of the boat and now that watch sits on the bottom of a lake. Fortunately, the company I bought it from was Apple.

When I was banging out 200+ miles per week on my Trek Madone, I wore a Timex Ironman on my left wrist and a Road I. D. on my right wrist.

When riding around town on my hipster MASI single-speed, I wear whatever I have on at the time.

I use the Apple Watch for this task.
I can't think of any reason why I would wear anything else.
