Any regrets buying watches

In particular those that scratch an itch but don't necessarily do it for you, long term.

For instance, I know my next 1-2-3 watches that are sizable purchases and would add nicely to my rotation.. but, some are a little more rare and harder to find so I'm looking at more affordable options in the interim. They're not exactly beaters, some are 1k+, but if I had to sell them tomorrow I wouldn't mind.

It's like an addict's itch. Want to keep collecting and constantly intrigued by brands I haven't even heard of, but it's prolonging the watches on my list.

Anyone else do this?

“You need a Panerai. Said a 6’2” colleague”
Not quite fitting on my frame.

I would not spend money on watches that aren't the ones you want (or think you want) long term. Transaction costs and the stress of wondering if you will get scammed by the seller are very real

You'll grow into it. ;-)

As much as I like Panerai I could never pull it off. Huge watch.

If buying redial watches counts .... beginning of my collecting , I bought a really “ pretty “ watch I thought it was genuine and a few months later I realized it was a bad redial . Went to the seller and he denied everything . I kept the watch and put on top of the shelf as a reminder

Bought a Morris cased watch shown in AJTT quick!
Ended up a redial that spoiled my love.
Will probably be my first watch sale.

Nope. Only regret the ones I’ve sold... but so goes the obsession!

Yes, there have been more than a few regrets. But I have learnt from each and every one of them.

Like any hobby, I've made purchases early on that I realized were foolish due to not researching enough. Only fix was either to take the hit or sell the item off. No regret though, you gatta walk before you can run.

That was me. Then along came the Speedmaster. You just have to find that one piece that speaks to you and will never leave your wrist.

I'm sure all of us have had some regrets, and I have had my fair share. It is especially difficult if you are purchasing a rare vintage or modern limited editions where you cannot try on personally ahead of time. Also sometimes the idea of ownership doesn't match your expectations when you actually strap it on your wrist.

biggest regrets have sadly come from sellers, not the watches

Made a few regrets but each helped me understand what I was truly after... which within itself sometimes evolves which sometimes leads to more regrets and more learning.. collecting is complicated...

It’s hard to try on rare and vintage watches so sometimes I’ve bought sight unseen only to realize it doesn’t work on my wrist.

I’ve also had watches that I really liked and then something will turn me off. For instance I had a watch serviced and the watchmaker knocked out the tritium pip on the bezel (and lost it). Although it’s usually not considered a deal breaker on a watch it just made me angry every time I wore it and I ended up having to sell it.

My only regret is that I have but one life to lose for my watch collection.
