Hey Gang, As someone who's always on the move, and near permanently has headphones in, I've started to listen to more and more spoken word stuff, from This American Life and NPR podcasts out of the US, to all the BBC Radio content on their app, and in the last few days The Grey Nato. Just wondering if anyone else is into podcasts? Do you listen to stuff about watches? Any recommendations?
Podcasts are awesome. I use Pocketcast so that playlists and play positions are synched between all my devices. Here are some of the shows I subscribe to: 60 Minutes E-Commerce Fuel - podcast for a private online forum of e-commerce entrepreneurs How I Built This - every show tells the story of how big companies started Meet The Press Nightly Business Report Planet Money - a podcast about economics and the economy Pop Culture Happy Hour Radio Lab - I highly recommend the first few seasons - awesome! Science Friday what's a good watch podcast?
Hardcore History w/ Dan Carlin - he only comes out with 2-3 podcasts per year but they are long and meticulously researched. I just finished listening to a new 6 hour episode about the Cuban Missile Crisis. Beyond Yacht Rock - 4 guys invent "arbitrary" musical genres and rank the top 10 songs from each WTF - Marc Maron long form interviews with comedians, actors, musicians, and other interesting people Fresh Air - NPR's long form interviews
A few more suggestions: For true crime, Serial was decent if overhyped. In The Dark is far superior, and has a better conclusion given the later outcomes. How Did This Get Made is pretty great. Kind of a cross of MST3K and Best Week Ever. If you're into cars Lehto's Law is pretty awesome. Basically a lawyer goes over different situations of car buying, and gives concise and clear answers and alternatives. So many out there, best is to figure out what sites you visit most and see if they or their contributors have podcasts. More likely than not the answer is ye
I've binged This American Life... the reporting style is right up my alley... conversational, interesting, easy to understand. I think if I were to be in radio, that's the style I'd like to emulate.
Politics -- Pod Save America (Jon Favreau, John Lovett, Tommy Vietor, and Dan Pfieffer discuss current events) Random/Funny -- No Such Thing as a Fish (Researchers for British panel show QI discuss their favorite facts of the week) History -- Futility Closet (Forgotten stories from the pages of history) Knowledge -- In Our Time (Melvyn Bragg and three guests discuss a specific topic from history, literature, science, or philosophy in depth) Design -- 99% Invisible (Stores about architecture, design, and how it influences the world around us) Enjoy!
My favorites are the Dan Carlin casts and The Nerdist, which has really interesting interviews (and not just about "nerd" stuff). And The Bugle for some good laughs and at times intense satire.
There's an interesting site called "The Moth", which features some excellent storytelling. This is one of my favorites, and it is well worth a listen: https://themoth.org/stories/data-mining-for-dates
Tales from the tinnie A ABC radio program If you want to laugh ! A religion for my neck of the woods.
Whenever someone asks for podcast recommendations, I always recommend StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson. Here's his website https://www.startalkradio.net/show/science-fitness-terry-crews/ but you can also subscribe on stitcher or whichever app you use to listen to your podcasts.
I'm a bit addicted: History - Stuff you Missed in History, In our Time (BBC), Revisionist History, Under the Influence Sci-fi - The Bright Sessions, TANIS, The Black Tapes, Limetown True Crime - Criminal, Someone Knows Something News Quiz - Wait, Wait ... Don't Tell Me Watches - The Grey NATO, On Time, Blamo (not a watch podcast but has a few interviews with watch guys on it)
I second WTF, there are some great episodes. The first season of Serial was good, the second one not so much. I hear people are excited about the third season though which will be out soon. How I Built This is very interesting. Great interviews with the founds of companies such as Spanx, Airbnb, Warby Parker, etc. Freakonomics radio is excellent. Tim Ferriss' podcast has some good interviews. There's one with Jocko Willink who is a former Navy Seal that was fantastic. Here's the link to that one. http://tim.blog/2015/09/25/jocko-wi...al&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer The first few seasons of Here's the Thing with Alec Baldwin were good.
Kermode and Mayo's Film Review Football Weekly (the Guardian) Slate's Political gabfest Friday Night Comedy (BBC Radio 4) In Our Time among many others. The BBC is a treasure trove.
He really does put in a lot of work into making those flow well. They're more history audiobooks than podcasts with the way they're put together, and he has an incredible way of compiling all the different sources into a coherent story. I listen to the same series a few times sometimes because it just feels like a storyteller telling you a great story by the fireside.
