What is the thin ring laying on top of the screw ring on the left? Is that the compressed crystal gasket?
- nope. This is a thin steel ring, which was placed between glass and lock ring. It is the genuine setup, how the watch has left the factory.
This ring can`t be re -used, when using service parts, as replacement lock ring and glass, as one of those parts is a bit higher and the steel ring must be removed, so you can tighten the lock ring properly. Reason why this is so rare, as most of ploprofs has this part just thrown away during later service.
Is the lower part of the step ring you describe as plastic the same as the ‘rubber segment’ in the exploded schematic?
- nope. This is the lower plastic part of my two-piece step ring. Very early setup, Yours is bras one piece, same as the one shown in the service manual.
Furthermore the seal kit I obtained for it has 2 orings of 28mm ID. Which fits perfectly under the step ring. However the other one is too small for the crystal. Is it supposed to be stretched over the step ring and compressed by its beveled edge squeezing it up to the underside of the crystal?
- one of the gaskets should be cut and placed into the case under the movement. Second should go on the step ring from the outside, if i remember well. See the pic.
Seems like an odd sealing mechanism to me.
- odd, but very effective.
