Angelus Dato 12 - split date movement

Recently acquired this Angelus Dato 12. The caliber 255 was the first big split date movement created. These are normally found with chrome case but patience paid off and I finally found one in steel and in an incredible condition.

The quirky thing about these is that it is unable to jump from 31 to 1. People back in the 1950s still haven鈥檛 figure it out. So the date will go up to 39 before jumping back to 1!

So I also have been reading up on big split date movements and know there are two others namely Venus 221 and Venus 216. Does anyone know which one was the first watch movement that was able to jump from 31 to 1?

Hi. I can't help with when the date changed from 31 straight back to 1 but I can tell you that, if by a big split date movement you mean when the two numbers of the date move on independent date wheels, then the Helvetia 75a movement had this back in the early 1930s.

Solvil/Ditis, Mimo/Girard Perregaux and of course Helvetia produced 'Big Date' watches using this movement in the 1930s.

Here is my page about them: https://www.helvetiahistory.co.uk/helvetia-large-date-watches

If you have a look at the link I posted I've added everything I was able to find. The Solvil watch was thought to be the first but it definitely uses a Helvetia movement so they must predate it.

Really not sure about the origination of the proper 'jumping' functionality. What I can tell you is you managed to snag a very nice Dato12. I've been on the lookout for one of these myself (or even better, a Datoluxe!). Congrats...and DIBS! 馃榿

Just found out that the Angora watch Co also used re-badged Helvetia 75A large date watches and found a picture of the date wheels:
