·It can be dirt on the gold indeed. I’ve seen it on gold plated cases stored for a long time.

·That looks great, IMO. Is it a gold capped watch that has tarnished? There was a Rolex (forgot the ref) auctioned off for a fortune not too long ago which had tarnished in the same way.
