Has anyone tried putting an after market display back on one of the older Speedmasters? There is a German company that appears to make good quality display backs with the appropriate spacers etc but I'm not sure how these will hold up to regular use.
That company is Thomas Preik and I've never heard of anyone having any issues; you could give it a Google and see if anything comes up
Thanks, I searched and it came up as Custom Watch Concepts. Perhaps the company name changed. I'm going to order one and give it a try.
Looks great! Is that the polished version case-back? Do you think the brushed would have matched the rest of the watch better?
Yes polished. I went back and forth trying to decide. I'm happy with the polished one. However, best improvement for Ed White is JB Champion bracelet.
Why not use the genuine Omega display back? Costs more but at least it's a genuine part and of very high quality.
I had a Preik caseback on an Ed but reverted back to the original one. Never had a JB Champion bracelet but after seeing that I think I need one .
that I believe there are correct original spacers from Omega that one would have to source, what i tried to do was to slap on the caseback from my 3592.50 while using the spacer for the Priek style casebacks; they're not compatible
No problems at all with a Thomas Priek ( Custom Watch Concepts), very well made and one third the price of the Omega crystal back. Which is slightly bigger giving better viewing area. Added bonus it saves your original case back. (Just don't loose it !)
I've got the perfect solution, am original Omega part with the "moonwatch" engraving removed. Just add a correct sized rubber gasket to stop the movement from rattling and away you go.
Yes, as I noted there are different enlargement rings (movement spacers) required for the solid case back and display case back. The movement is held in place by the case back, so there has to be contact between it and something - in the solid case back models it's the inner anti-magnetic cover, that is in turn fitted to the enlargement ring. In the display case back models, the enlargement ring is taller - that version is on the left and the one for the solid case back is on the right in this photo I took of them a few years ago: Doing the conversion with a genuine Omega case back, without changing the enlargement ring is hack work IMO... Cheers, Al
