It also depends which airports you travel through, I travel a lot through Europe, Middle East and Far East and pretty much always asked to remove my watch. Its second nature now and I just put my items in my carry on bag before the screening but does seem strange that some countries its mandatory to take off the watch and some dont even ask.

Update on my fathers experience at the TSA X-ray inspection:

He walked through the metal detector three times with it beeping before they asked him to remove the watch.

He then walked through without the watch( which was now in the tray going through x-ray ) and he was waved down with the metal detector baton device.

He then proceeded to the trays which were out of the X-ray machines and grabbed his belongings. He then stayed in the area waiting for my cousin to pass through. He believes approximately five minutes went by when my cousin got through, he looked at his wrist to look at the time to see and it wasn't there. So he walked right back to the tray retrieval to ask where his watch was. They claimed they did not know and referred him to the supervisor who gave him forms to file a claim.

He asked again on the return for the watch and was given forms again.

I believe someone swiped it from the tray when it did finally come out of the X-ray machine, he was in the area the entire time though. The watch definitely wasn't in the trays when he grabbed the rest of his stuff after he was scanned with the metal detector baton , so possibly it was still being x-rayed when he grabbed the stuff from the other trays.

The watch did look nice, this is it with the plastic and everything.

I bought it for him last Father's Day and this was the first time he was going to proudly wear his water resistant watch in Mexico.

Moral of the story, keep your eye on your watch if they ask you to remove it.

I have just had a pair of expensive sunglasses taken from my checked baggage on an Antigua-London flight - they obviously take things that they have a ready market for.

I agree.

Sorry for your loss.
If you purchased the tickets with a visa signature you can look up the lost luggage benefit that covers stolen goods. I submitted a claim but no idea if it will work, I didn't have receipts of purchase for everything so that probably won't help.

Sorry to hear about the losses. I always keep my watches with me in my carry-on bag. Last week I was flying out of the UK and I was asked to take my watch off walking through the x-ray machine. Having previously been a frequent international traveler for work, I was surprised as I don't believe I've ever been asked to do that.

The craziest thing is, they have crap loaded cameras there. It should have take them no time, to find out who took it and what gate did the person went to.....

My iPod was stolen off the conveyor years ago in Oakland.
I demanded that the duty officer review the video because I actually witnessed one of the TSA agents grab it.
He asked me calmly if I would like to spend three hours in the office because that's how long it would take to review the footage and file paperwork.
I opted to board my flight.

Yeah my father was in a time crunch too.

Sorry about the iPod. I forgot mine in the car so I didn't have it, lucky me I guess haha.

Update:

A bit over a month later visa actually granted my claim but not full purchase price since I had no receipts.

Keep your receipts, purchase plane tickets with your credit card, and there is a small amount of insurance.

Definitely don't feel positive the more expensive timepieces would be covered, but I won't put any watches in my check in bags from now on.

Things I had to submit during the claims process:

1)photos of the watches
2) receipts for watches
3) plane ticket itinerary showing credit card used to purchase
4) credit card statement showing plane tickets purchase
5) claim submitted to airline
6) claim conclusion from airline
