Can someone confirm dial authenticity, the dial looks like a redial compared to the only one I could find on the web. This is the only picture I have and trying to determine if it’s worth proceeding to acquire it. Thank you all in advance.
Keep in mind that a little bit of knowledge is dangerous- that's me! The little that I can see of the crown leads me to believe it's not VC. Maybe you can post a scan of the movement?
The minute markers are out of whack. Starting with minute 1. It looks like me on my 3rd shot. “Lem..lem...let me seeee if I can punch 60 holes in perfect uniform with this fork.” “Yep, still got it.“
Is it a big enough deal for you to make a small gamble? Fonts are a tad off too. The “&” is the biggest give away. Could be variation from early production.
Thanks, these where my exact observations and wanted to see if an expert VC member would have any insight given the sloppy indicators on both dials and if the Guilloche technique had any implication on what we are seeing.
Notice the difference in the crown as opposed to the crown on the one OP posted. Looks like I made a good "guess"
I'm bettin' on the first one being incorrect. Now only "time" and a real expert will tell. Something about VC and their mushroom crowns. Where's Alex when we need him?
I'd say if you are buying this watch for an increase in value -no If you're buying it because it appeals to you in that "certain way" and the price is fair for condition - go for it Pretty sure the dial has been redone but the crown might be original - does it have the VC Maltese cross embossed on it (I think I see a hint)? I don't think the HOdi crown is original. Watches from the 40-50's were typically worn every day; crowns just wore out; to me it's unusual to find one as original and it was also quite normal to have dials redone (during the 50's in particular) as well.
Thank you for your insight. Is the Hodinkee one also redialed? The only reason I ask is because of the sloppy minute markers on both? This watch is going to be thrown in as part of a deal I’m trying to close on.
I believe the Hodi has a much better chance of being original-look at the 6 o clock diamond shaped marker on yours- it appears off center or twisted; the Hodi also says swiss at the bottom; until 10 years ago or so reprinters would not add swiss on a redo; lastly note the accent mark (dash) above the 2nd e in geneve for a 50's piece that would most typically be present on an original dial
Hi bill, I will try to get the information this weekend and I will share my findings ASAP. Like mentioned above this watch is just a throw in if I buy the other watch. thank you,
