·Hello everyone
I joined this forum last year, with the main motivation to learn more in preparation to sourcing a vintage Omega for a significant birthday coming up (it felt unfair to ask my wife to do the work!)
I confess to lurking and learning much more than posting and have gleaned a lot from this very helpful community. My particular interest has narrowed in on 60s Seamasters/SMDVs with 5xx calibres, steel case - very plain, no fancy case or dial finishes etc. I'm willing to pay a bit of a premium for peace of mind, as I plan on this being the only watch I buy (promise!) I just love the style and would have it as a daily wearer which brings me a bit of joy every time I check the time.
Some impressions I've picked up above the more detailed fishing advice from this forum seems to be that 1) this is not a particular rare watch I am looking for; 2) with patience and a keen eye, the price can be pretty good; 3) despite this, as a novice, you'll probably get your first watch purchase wrong (which I am desperate to avoid in this case)
So, I've found it quite a daunting prospect!
I've found this watch on chrono24 (link, photos below - https://www.chrono24.co.uk/omega/om...g-original-silver-finish-dial--id18779256.htm)
Wanted to test my fishing skills with this community.
My assessment is as follows:
- Case has been over polished for a vintage buyer and is too sharp, but feels acceptable to me for my purposes.
- The hands look right too, albeit the tritium fill is missing from the second hand and partially missing from the hour - would appreciate views on whether it would be OK to get that re-done (noting I just want it as a wearer not particularly with a collector's eye!)
- Red flag - reference number (14759) is hard to match to a 552 calibre. The listing says its a 165002 which is clearly wrong from the image. I am not sure if the fault is with the listing or if this is a franken of some kind - welcome views.
- Price - on the high side, even without the concerns above. If it was a let's say more straightforward example I'd pay the amount asked.
Views welcome!
