Hi guys, I’m new to this forum(and the speedmaster cult in general). I’ve found a local private collector selling a 1986 145.022 for the equivalent of 3.6k USD. The bezel appears quite worn but the rest of watch(case, dial and bracelet) looks fine. Is this a good buy? The prices on chrono24 appear to be much higher for a similar watch. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (The first photo was taken by me when I met up with the seller for a viewing. The other pictures are from his listing.)
Why no picture of the whole movement Bezel looks shot ( easy fix if you want a new one ) Needs a service and the movement looks dirty so factor this in the price. I would pass on this watch unless it was a lot cheaper
The rear of the lugs look to have taken a real beating at some stage. Price is high for a watch in that shape.
If it helps, here are a few snaps of my .022, 44.1 million serial ( extract on order now) - but also has the tall and open S. The lume on these 80s speedies seems to go a lime green colour imo Edited for grammar
He brought the watch to omega when he bought it and they verified that its genuine and that its from 1986.
Unless it comes with the bracelet, full papers, and proof of a recent service by a qualified watchmaker, that price on a common 80s era Speedmaster is too high. Even with all of those, I’d still think it is too high because it is far from a mint condition watch. I’d spend a little more and just get a new one. If you can negotiate a 10-15% discount from an AD (which can be done), it would only be about $1000 more than the asking price for this heavily used one, it would come with the complete package of goodies in the new box, AND it would have a two-year warranty. If you buy this used watch, have it serviced by a good watchmaker, and replace the bezel, you’d probably be at the same total price. Of course, if having a tritium dial or a watch from 1986 is very important to you, then all of this is moot.
I'll bet that bezel looks way cooler in person. You mention a bracelet but it's not pictured - is it included? I'd look to spend $2500-3k on this. Lower end without bracelet, higher end with.
Watch is Ok. Not that bad and looks authentic. However, as many other have commented: price is way to high! Moreover since there is no bracelet included!. (approximately 550 Euro for a 1171 bracelet).
I'd only spend about 2k-2.5k for this. There's just not that much value considering the condition. On top of that, we don't even know whether or not the lugs have been polished to the point of nonexistence.
Unless there is some emotional connection to this watch I'd pass. No bracelet. Not real clean. There are too many nice vintage watches that you can pick up for that price range!
The movement looking that rough would be enough for me to pass for anything except a steal, which I feel would stop in the vicinity of $2500.
