Have my sights set on a GMT -Master. Not familiar with the model or pricing and would appreciate a sense check from more knowledgeable members

Being sold by a well known dealer with good reputation. One owner watch- dealers blurb:

The classic Rolex GMT-Master, model reference 16700. A one owner watch supplied new on 6th March 1999, as confirmed by the COSC certificate and the original bill of sale. This 1999 U-series watch is fitted with the SWISS Luminova dial, which only had a short production run before being discontinued.
An original watch in very good condition, we have retained the serif bezel insert which faded has faded slightly with age.
It is complete with Rolex boxes, GMT instruction booklet with leather holder and calendar card.

Pics:

Priced at £9995 UK pounds

Been offered to trade in my Milgauss Z blue @ 6K so balance of 4K if I accept that price.

What do you guys think of

1) the watch itself - a good example?
2) the deal - overall price and trader in value.... I'm not too sure what the Z blue is selling at currently second hand.... Bought it for about 6.3k at RRP on 2019. Broke the glass but had this replaced by rolex and full service. Haven't worn it since, so it is mint.

Thanks in advance

Are there anymore pictures from the lug holes and the bracelet/clasp?

It looks lovely from the pictures provided.

Personally, I think it’s a little expensive. I think with a bit of shopping around or bargaining you could do a bit better.

Also, you can get 16710 around that age. Depends what you want re quick date set (16700) or jumping hour (16710). I prefer the latter in a gmt, others differ.

the 6k trade in isn’t too bad as a part ex however - many would offer less for the convenience. If you can knock the dealer down 500/1000 quid it would be even better

It seems a bit rich for a rather common reference. I would also look more closely at the lugs, serial # btw the lugs, movement and service history in making the final determination.

Thanks @stevec14.... Aside from knowing I like the look of the GMT Pepsi I haven't done a huge amount of research around them and generally have a lack of knowledge around vintage rolex.

Find it difficult to gauge price on these things. Chrono very overpriced and don't frequent other forums

Thanks @ATWG

Take it looking at these areas to determine authenticity and if it's been polished excessively.....

There is nothing much wrong with the watch from what I can see. I’ve had 2 of these and it may have had a polish but it certainly hasn’t been butchered as far as I can ascertain.

As I said, it’s a nice piece but I think you could knock a few quid off. There’s a lot of these about at the 8.5-9.5 mark.

try and bargain the price of a service (Rolex) off and you won’t be doing that badly.

The watch looks good but looks polished. Not a bad trade in price, watch price set a little high.

Thanks mate.

I'll try a bit of back and forth and see what happens! 😀

@Eric304- he's told me a lot 'a light polish 10 years ago'

Have asked for more pics to see what this translates to in reality!

Always be a bit suspious, when you receive 20 photos from the same angle and no photos of the lugs or crown guards

its literally the watch in the same angle repeated and one zoom in of the dial, my advice is get more angles of the watch. that bezel has seen better days

As a point of reference, I picked up a lightly polished GMT Master Ref 16700 U-Series serial no. with a Swiss only dial and original black bezel in January 2020 of this year; however, it did not come with box or papers. I paid the local currency equivalent of $8300 (the ZAR has been relatively weak against the USD and GBP recently). Based on that generally comparable data point and accounting for the box/papers, I think the Ref 16700 above is on the expensive side.

Separately, I dig that faded, dinged up Pepsi bezel, and I'd put it on my 16700 in a heartbeat...

Also agree that you need photos from different angles to assess the amount of polishing -- especially the lugs/lug holes and the crown guard. Good luck!

Looks like a watch from Hackett Watches which is generally overpriced as a whole. Condition does not warrant such a high trade difference. I think you might do better to keep searching for a better example (or negotiate down considerably if it’s the one you must have). The pics seem to hide angles that are key to ascertaining it’s condition. 9 of the 10 pics shown are essentially the same. Would ask them why that is

@killer67 you have a good eye!
Thanks for your advice and to the others who have commented.... Think I will pause on pursuit of this watch for now 😀

I just got a coke version of 16710 for USD $11,000. It seems like it's going retail price at this point. (with paper).
I think you are getting retail price, not so cheap or expensive. Certainly, collectible item I think. (I did not say investment)...
I love the watch...
