Glad to see we are on the same wavelength.

I think we should make sure to have "barely joking" too.

On Twitter, where I am active—if not completely obnoxious—tone indicators are advocated in part as a courtesy to neurodivergent* users, many of whom struggle with exactly this kind of thing. Twitter and online discourse in general is a minefield in any case; I've never used tone indicators but I have honestly learned a lot about these issues recently. When I see other members here patiently engaging new users' questions it occurs to me that comments that I am inclined to snap or snark at in response may be coming from someone who is genuinely not trying to be argumentative.
* From the OP's linked article: "neurodivergent - a wide category that can refer to people with a range of neurological differences including autism spectrum disorder and dyslexia"

I have a hard time here in Portland because I am from the East Coast. They always think I'm mad. So this is pretty spot on for me.

I couldn't agree more, I'm also from the East Coast. I still don't understand how anything gets done on the West Coast - no one ever directly expresses an opinion.

AND you have to sit in silence for 20 mins while they explain their thoughts when you got the idea five seconds after they starting talking.

Ugh! Yes! I think we need a separate thread to go on about West Coast traits 'cause East Coasters definitely don't have any bad ones themselves. /s

Except that Jim guy in Connecticut.

(Sorry, can't remember which indicator is which. I think he'll figure it out though.)

What would I put for- 🤬 stupid idea /fsi

And the New York Times writes this to lead the article.....wtf have they been doing for hundreds of years-with print media

Written language is an imperfect method for the messy, complex business of communication, where facial expressions, gestures and vocal tones transmit oceans of meaning and subtext - for those, at least, who can read them.
