I love the snobby watch club. Speaking of can I interest you in a gently used Speedmaster ....;)

Worn only by a grandma on Sunday to church. I swear...

probably not directly related to discussion but i hate it when people look down certain brands, such as Enicar, which is an excellent brand, just because it isn't a prestigious swiss brand per se or its brand perception is degraded because for e.g. it was heavily imported by asian consumers...

Well like a lot of things it comes down to this -- Buy what you like. Can be applied to most things.

This might apply to some watches, but they'd be the ones at the highest of high-end, like the Rolexes that sell at Christie's for millions of dollars.

Personally, I find the whole elitist mentality a huge turn-off. I do love me some nice watches though.

Haven't seen the episode yet, but that is a great show. Low-key one of my favorites on TV right now

I would think it could apply to a lot of the Rolex market, with some of the authenticators also being the sellers, etc. Example being the whole John Mayer situation.

Not sure what situation you refer to, but I agree with your statement.

Watches are a bit different because the foundation of the piece is comparable in quality and rarity to its peers while art you can sprinkle some paint on a canvas and ask for 20 million. Not saying people don't fluff up the market but it's a bit harder

IMHO, Some brands have staked their brand and pricing on exactly this phenomenon. Rolex comes to mind, but they aren't alone. Omega could even be argued to fit that category, although they don't seem as vocal about it.

That's one side of the argument...then you have those who really appreciate Enicars and will pay top dollar for those that are sufficiently rare.

Which the above video brings out and as some people have pointed out - much like the art world can call a scrawl a masterpiece, uncrupulous watch sellers can call a redial/polished/replaced parts watch a "rare work of art" that is worthy of a high price, often to unsuspecting and wealthy people.

Not to mention damage dressed up as rare and valuable patina.
