Hi, This is my grandfather’s watch, given to him in 1953. Is anyone able to identify the model or provide info? My folks have the watch and I’ve no pics of movement or case back. Thanks in advance.

The case looks about the same as this one: https://www.chrono24.com.au/longine...35mm-spider-lugs---mens-watch--id35430106.htm

Guessing from the era it would be a Longines 23Z movement but they’re not my specialty, not hugely valuable but very good reliable watches and worth having serviced and wearing if it has a family connection.
Thanks a lot, that is helpful. I'll have the watch in hand in a week or so and will take it in for service. I'm hoping the dial can be tidied up non-invasively but I do not know if that is how these things work.

I think you are seeing the results from the last attempt at a "tidy up" many years ago.

Doubtful, my grandfather died in 1993 and I do not believe the watch has been out of a drawer since then and I also doubt very much he would have ever had the dial retouched in any way.

It was common practice for watchmakers to refinish or touch-up dials in the past as watches did not have very good water resistance so it was often done as a part of normal servicing, for watches of that era it’s extremely common and was probably done prior to the 1990’s

Interesting. My grandfather was pretty fastidious with his stuff so I suspect it received servicing, but I'm not too sure when he last used the watch prior to 1993. All speculation anyway until I get it in hand and off for inspection.

I had posted this earlier with a pic from my folks, finally received the watch and it is pretty cool. The movement will need servicing but is clean. I'm hoping the dial can be cleaned up a little. I don't want it overdone but a little less grubby would be nice, not sure if possible but we'll see.
