Hi everybody,

Im new to the forum so a short introduction.
37yo living in Belgium and always had an interest in watches and gemstones.
As far as watches goes, never had a really expensive example exept a vintage gold Longines.
Now i have been offered a vintage seamaster from the 50's.
Its from an old lady that said het husband bought it new many years ago.
Unfortunatly box and papers are missing.
Can anybody help identify the model number cause i didnt find many with the crosshair..
Is it gold capped, filled , 14k or 18k ?
Any ideas on price since this would be my first omega. Just love the look off vintage watches and leather straps.
Managed to get a few pictures from the lady and that was a whole task for her
Many thanks in advance!

Hi Marc.

If the watch is solid gold it will have hallmarks, stamps denoting gold content. I would say there is a small risk that it is a gold filled model, though they are usually US made.

The reference is usually called "pre-deville" and it is probably from the early sixties.

Where are you and the watch located?

Ooh la-la-la...

Looks to me like an 18k, 'Pre-De-Ville' Seamaster. Sometime between 1961-1963, as it doesn't have the early alpha hands. Likely 18k because the case seems quite polished, but it has the double-bevel caseback as opposed to the single-bevel of the steel and GF models. The crystal looks like it's a service replacement, as is the crown.

That said, the case seems like it has been fairly heavily polished. The bevels are not well-defined.

Overall, if you can get a decent deal, I would definitely consider going for it. The dial seems to be quite beautiful.

Typical Steel/GF Caseback Profile:

18k model Caseback Profile:

(Note the light 'WATERPROOF' engraving on the outer bevel beneath the medallion."

Thanks so far for the info.
Myself and the watch are located in Belgium.
If the lady lets me know ill be picking it up and will be posting more detailed pictures and let a watchdealer open it up to check.
I just like the old look of the watch.
For me personally it doesnt matter if its polished too much , that adds more character.
Price was 350euros, wich to me seemed like a fair price.

Absolute bargain. The melt value alone is probably twice that.

Yeah I'm definitely not saying that you should melt it down, but deals like this are something else.

Unfortunatly no more respons from the lady...

Happens all the time. You need to do your research and learning in advance so you can jump quickly on a good watch when you find it. For 350 Euros, it was a no-brainer.
