... because they're driving the market, not following it.

It's like art: if you own two $1000 paintings and sell one for $10000, even if you sell it to yourself, you now have a $10000 painting.

    C’mon guys....don’t you see? It’s the ...
quintessential 1970s “El Primero” model features an unmistakable tonneau-case design from the era. ....

It's easy: Hodinkee watches are not theirs, they sell on behalf of customers, and Hodinkee gets a 15% cut.
You bet that they maximise the asking price, that equals maximizing revenue for them... Talk about a nice business model :)

i well understand their business model. .some of the listing are so obviously wrong i think they have put them (and themselves) in legal jeopardy. how hard is it to hire someone who understands what is correct on a vintage watch

I'm not defending Hodinkee. I actively dislike their approach to selling watches. I believe you have to approach their advertising with a healthy dose of cynicism and even distrust. On the other hand, if I could sell my watch collection at the sort of prices they set, I could retire early... so maybe I have a touch of envy colouring my view of them while at the same time hoping that they drive the prices up.

They clearly sell their own brand and service to a very narrow market segment of people who have the budget and probably not the knowledge or the time to find similar pieces elsewhere.
That doesn’t mean anyone else would be able to charge the same prices for the same watches.

Wow this type of markup really makes me think if I'll ever sell my 5512 I'll do it trough them. I didn't know they only take 15%

That being said. I love that watch and the way black Lume and specially the green dial

and. . no surprise the hodinkee a385 is still sitting there. more surprising to me is the analog shift one is as well!
we should take bets on how long that rindt sits on hodinkee. there appears to be a limit to even hodinkee customer's gullibility

Guys, the entire vintage watch market is getting crazy. Hodinkee are only smart enough to surf the wave..
