A question about modding a watch.

I'm thinking about buying the old fois and modding it with the crown from the new one.

My question is, what will Omega do when I need to get it serviced ?

Restore the watch to its as delivered condition, charging you for the crown. Maybe not charged, as crowns are generally included during servicing. The watch will be "restored" to its original state, no question. At worst, refuse service on the modified watch.

I doubt it would raise any comment from Omega at all but as above, to ensure water resistance Omega would routinely change the crown for a new one in the original size. Their unhappiness with mods is more about ensuring that the 2 year warranty isn’t used because something non standard failed.

That sucks, because I like the fat crown on the new FOiS, but I'm not a fan of the lume or dial colour.

You know that you don’t have to send it to Omega to service it. I have a modern modded Speedy that I’ll never send to Omega but that’s okay, as my independent with parts account performed the mod and will leave it as is when it’s time to service it.

As stated above, an Omega Service Center will require the watch to be restored to original. That said, you can get an Omega serviced by an independent watchmaker who has an Omega parts account. They are much more able to work around these issues. I've worked with two independents with an Omega parts account and I know they would service the watch without requiring the crown to be restored to original. That assumes the crown fits properly and does not negatively impact the function of the watch.

Not exactly a DIY task that though I would think.

True, I would have used a watchmaker, but changing crowns isnt that big a job or have I misunderstud something?

I think if the stems are initially cut properly and stay attached to their respective crowns, it is pretty straightforward to remove and install another crown. I'd feel comfortable doing it, but I've removed crowns/stems and taken watches apart and assembled them before.
