This just happened whilst holding the watch in my hands and winding it up. No pressure to the clasp. The pin, which appears rusty and corroded, just completely failed.

Thank goodness it didn't happen while I was biking to work which is what I did 3 minutes later

    Be careful out there!

Lucky! That would have been a hurtful loss! I lost two watches, thankfully not expensive ones, due to failing pins and springbars. Since then, I always let a watchmaker check the (vintage) bracelet and renew the pins if needed when I intend to wear it.

Looks like somebody used a mild steel nail to replace the SS pin.

    Lucky escape indeed!

Nice reminder to inspect bracelets especially those from the Bay. I recently received one that had some really wonky repairs to the clasp/ bracelet that weren't obvious at first glance.

    Good save Chris!

Might as well have N.R. address that chrono creep. But after the summer please, I'm dropping of my Eddy W. this month.

Yep - pin should not be corroded like that, so something fishy happened to that one at some point...

That hinge pin is almost certainly a replacement non standard pin. It should be stainless steel. When you take it for repair, specify stainless steel only.

It's a sign to buy yourself a nice new NATO or leather strap.

I wore my Ed on a NATO...and I really, really liked it! It was a worn old Phoenix and it looked great.
