A looming question...

Hello, all:

So, I may have the opportunity to grab this one for $5500, which, I think wouldn’t be bad for this piece. But I’m only hesitating because the hands don’t seem to match the dial’s lume. Also, the case back is a bit over polished, but it could be worse. What say you for this price?

Seems about right, more or less if you like it. It's not unusual for hands and dial to age differently. It looks like some initials were scrawled on the back, and then later someone tried to erase it. As always, it would be nice to see the inside.

Hands almost never match the dial lume when they’re untouched.

Ask for a better picture of the initials on the case back, they are worse then the pictures show and partially covers the Omega logo. I looked at this one a month ago or so but can’t find the better picture he sent.

The dial is very nice, quite typical that hands do not match dial lume... Good plus. The bezel insert is a DON in fair plus condition and the case has sharp angles, definitely not over polished but does have wear... scratches and dings.... good minus minus

A 145.022-69 DON
Dial 8K
Bezel 5K
Case 5.5K
Average is 5.8 - 6.1

The price is fair at 5.5

The question now is:

Snag this one, or wait until the new speedy comes out??

Here are those photos. Not sure it is a dealbreaker in my eyes. I just ask myself now: why buy a vintage if the new one has all of these features and a better movement with an applied logo? Gah! Maybe I am just scared to pull the trigger..

That is purely a matter of personal preference. Do you appreciate the history and patina of a vintage watch or do you want a clean, new waranteed watch. Only you can answer that.

If you want vintage, I would look into the price of a descent replacement caseback. You should be able to find one.

Time to soul search, I suppose.

Just buy it.
Who cares about a few letters on a caseback you don’t see on a 1969 watch.
DON looks good few chips but it’s history.

This watch will be always cooler than the new one. 1969 or 2021 is a no brainer

Vintage and new are totally different beasts. This is something you can only answer for yourself. For me, the answer would always be vintage.

The caseback is a relatively minor issue at this price point.

I'd buy it no question and source a better case back. Take the advice of the great help here... if you follow my posts trying to find a '65 you'll see the responses of what to look for and the awesome help I got. Learning from these guys makes me think this watch is pretty good vintage condition for the money. Maybe deal for a discount (so you have coin left over to buy a better case back) If you don't go thru with the deal shoot me a PM - I'd like to take up the opportunity. Thanks!

You could do both?! One vintage to baby and take out special occasions and another for daily wear. They would compliment each other..partic if you got the knew one with display caseback 😀

If I have a choice between vintage and contemporary, I have always bought vintage. Yes, it is a matter of choice. I like the character, the patina, and the history of the vintage watches. I look at a vintage Speedmaster, in good condition mind you, and compare it to the modern day version...the vintage model wins every time. I love the patina of the tritium plots, the character of the dial, the hands, the history of the watch itself, and, of course, wabi sabi... look it up if you don't know what it means. Yes, I recently bought a very mint 145.022-68 transitional, but, although in amazing condition it still has character that a contemporary watch will lack.

Take Rolex Submariners, for example, vintage wins every time for me as I can't stand the metal rings around the plots, ceramic bezels, etc...contemporary watches, IMHO, will not age like the watches from the years gone by, the materials used today are far more stable. I may be wrong, but, I don't believe so.

The choice is yours.
