If we were around in 1933, we all would have been labeled as "gold hoarders", even though ownership of gold jewelry was technically legal under the Executive Order.

Why do you say simply owning gold watches etc. would label us gold hoarders? The government didn't confiscate watches or collectible coins, just bullion and bullion coins. Good thing, or many good gold watches would have been melted down. Jewelers and other gold manufacturers continued to operate.

Because at that time there was a lot of public peer pressure to turn in all gold. The US was in the middle of the Great Depression and this executive order was hyped up to be the cure-all.

It would have been difficult to hide the fact that you had a quantity of gold watches as a hobby. It was also possible that someone would turn in your name for investigation.
