Hi All, just saw this black dial Seamaster at a local flea market and am considering buying for what appears to be a bargain price of $500. Based on the overall good case condition, I have some faith in the black dial originality. However, one of the many things I've learned here is that a black dial of this era is to be scrutinized even more than usual. My only real concern is the Seamaster script; does it look too thick? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Look at the minute markers on either side of the 10 and 11 o'clock applied metal markers.

Yeah, I did too- I was looking at the extra hash mark 10 minute marker and wondering if that was a reflection in the retaining ring or an oops

 

Everyone knows that the 56th minute of the hour is always the longest

 

It’s this of apocryphal lore we need more of. I hear that Fab. Suisse models had 62 minute markers to conform to the fact that French hours had 62 minutes prior to 1970 (The extra two minutes had something to do with cheese aging).

 

I heard that 2 extra minutes were for one to allow the nose to develop prior to chugging, er...guzzleing, er…..sipping the wine.
