A “Don Draper” Seamaster DeVille (but not a redial)

I started a thread on this watch in 2017 and was told (and insisted) Omega never actually produced a black crosshair dial SMDV. And the folks out on that thread are still pretty adamant about that. You could contribute to horological history here, @seekingseaquest , and order an extract from the archives. That would settle this matter once and for all.
Hi Jaspers....

We need a bit controversies to spice up our life..... what a boring life if it just linear all agreement....

I have a collector friend who had a Seamaster Constellation (yes both at same dial) who became hot debates here years ago.
when I showed him the thread he just laughed and say...... I dont care their opinion. I am the one who own it.... those commenters don't have it. Who cares about their opinion. I love it and I will keep it to the last, I will sell my other Omegas before I sell it.

I admire his conviction. As long as you dont do it for quick profit & flip then who cares?
Btw a seasoned collector here offered him good price and he politely decline it.

Managed to snag another Don Draper DeVille, this one a 14730 pre-DeVille. Very similar dial furniture to my other one, but the dial isn’t as clean. I think the 3 o’clock marker was replaced as well.

Yeah, one really wasn’t enough. 😁
I’ve been in this situation once or twice before 😀

In my defense, I was hoping it was nicer than my other one.. but can’t always be so lucky

DIBBS! 😁

Am I the first dibbs for this new one?
I have already called dibs of all his future finds in perpetuity! 😝

For those that don’t know, one of Don Draper’s watches from Mad Men was a black crosshair dial 1960s Seamaster DeVille. There are many articles on the topic (Hodinkee here), however most fail to note that the one he wore in the show was actually a redial (“Swiss made” text positioning is the biggest giveaway). Needless to say, most of the black gilt Seamasters out there are redials, especially crosshair DeVilles post the Mad Men feature.

Last year, I was lucky enough to pick up an original one from an auction house in the UK. I’ve seen other originals - including an identical dial variant as mine from the Omega Enthusiast (also below).

I finally got it back from service, where it also received a NOS crystal. I’m pretty in love 🥰

And Omega Enthusiast’s:
Stunning!! Well done!

No chance for daytime photos yet, but I joined the club as well!

It's a galaxy dial (uniform damage from radiation and sunlight)

Really mesmerizing watch, wish I had a thin vintage crocodile strap in 18mm as well, all my black vintage straps are 19mm

Mainly bought it to trade with a rare C-Case if the opportunity arises and enjoy it in the meantime

Very hard to take a photo, but all the original lume spots seem to have some lume left as well

And a wrist shot:

Beautiful stuff. To get a strap that will do the watch justice, you really need to spend the money and have one custom made to your exact specs. Ihave never bought a ready made strap that fit...I always end up punching a hole between the existing holes. When I finally broke down and had one made...the specific hole I wanted the tang to go through, and where that was on the skin, was perfect. And not too much strap poking out and catching on things. Those watches deserve as much.

That watch brought me to OF now 10 years ago. In turn, OF then sparked and enabled an expensive hobby. By the transitive property, that Mad Men watch owes an apology to my retirement accounts.

(I went cross-hair connie, btw)

Here's a "factory original" "professionally redone" 😕 black dial SMDV with crosshairs for sale, if anyone is into that. Not cheap, though, of course. https://www.ebay.com/itm/2753607711...CsRVpgvTba&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
The emphasis should be put on “professionally redone”. If you want to discuss, please create another thread dedicated to the watch in question. This thread deserves to be pure 😀.

This website may earn commission from Ebay sales.

At least the “professionally redone” version can align the crosshairs with the 9/3 indices 😗

I’ve posted this before, but I had the chance of wearing the actual Draper watch before it was auctioned here in NY …

How much did it fetch?
