We were watching Godzilla vs Hedorah tonight and my five-year-old got excited by the dive watch worn by a precocious child in the film. He's now asking for one... Looks like a 6105-8000 to me? What do y'all think?



If it is a 6105-8000, I hate to tell my little guy how many weeks of allowance it's going to take to save up for an original.

 

Correct. Good catch. I like how it’s worn over the sleeve. There is a modern reissue as well, but still not super cheap.

 

Dang, tough luck for our little guy. Gonna take him 150-250 weeks of allowance to save up for one depending on condition .

For the reissue, I see the prospex SPB315 takes a lot of design notes from the 6105-8000. Is that the one you meant? Seems to be going for around $900 used, but I'm not sure it has the charm of the original though.

Edit: upon further googling, the SPB313 with a white dial is kinda fun and seems to be less than $700 used. So, maybe only a year of allowance to save up, lol.

 

I can’t recall the specific references, but yes there are a few different dial variations, but they are clearly a very close imitation of the 6105-8000/9 case and style.

Realistically the originals can be had for under $2k in very good condition. And decent examples can be purchased at auction for $1k or less, they may just need some TLC. They still fly under the radar occasionally. I just sold an excellent example, fully serviced and restored, for about $1700. Not selling any more at the moment however, because I only have one left and I really like them.

I've started my hunt for a 6105-8000 in decent condition. As per usual, I'm already getting impatient after two weeks. An Ebay seller offered me this for $1.9K, and perhaps I can negotiate down a bit further.

I'm tempted and may need a more experienced collector to talk me off the ledge. Does that seem overpriced for the condition? Should I just be a big boy and wait for a better one to come along?

 

Hey fellow Seiko fans, I've been hunting around some more and think this looks like maybe a good ratio of quality to price. Would anyone be willing to let me know what you think?

My naive assessment:
- Dial and looks to be in good shape, but not 'suspiciously good shape.'
- Correct proof/proof on dial and case back
- Movement looks correct to my untrained eyes (6105 A with no hacking would be correct for a proof/proof?)
- I like that there's still some color on the second hand
- Lume on minute and hour hands is a bit rough, and the case is a bit beat up - but I'm not looking for NOS. I'm just going to add more dents and dings myself.
- Seller claims it was serviced in 2018 and is keeping good time.
- Asking price is $1.9K, but is located overseas, so likely more after shipping/customs charges

Sounds like you’re trying to talk yourself into this. You ok looking at those black hands? At that price factoring in customs etc I think you can do better

 

This was sage advice, but I was weak willed. I think the condition is slightly better than the one I was looking at previously, but I definitely overpaid.

 

This one looks way better! What year? This watch in reasonable condition isn’t cheap and you will enjoy it. I think I overlaid for mine but it’s nice and I’m happy whoever I wear it. So enjoy!! Congrats.

 

If all the parts are correct/original, the serial # indicates April 1968. I paid about 20% over avg prices, but I think this one's a keeper so I'm not going to sweat it too much. The main downside here is, since the condition is fairly good, I'm just dreading the inevitable first time I slam it into a door knob.

 

Yes I understand. But remember these watches were chosen for their durability under water in combat by Navy Seals so I wouldn’t worry about household hazards! You can always replace the crystal!! Wear and enjoy it I say

Do you have any recommendations for learning more about this period of Seiko? I thought I had educated myself a bit before buying, but I honestly did not know about the 'long sweep hand'. I really should be more careful before I make more vintage purchases. So much to learn and so many pitfalls.

 

This forum is great resource to ask before buying. Saved me several bad purchases. I generally google the reference I’m interested and find reviews and guides for collecting that give a good over view and once you’ve done that you tend to get better answers from the senior guru OF members
Try it for the 6105 there’s a lot out there. Also dealers like dcvintagewstches have good info.
