I'm not sure I agree with the logic here; while I don't think omega necessarily encourages flipping, I actually think it's tremendously beneficial to the product if it happens because it implies the product is selling above MSRP (otherwise flipping isn't profitable) which makes either this product a more attractive buy to a collector, or signal that future limited editions are a better buy.

I agree. It is the concept of "float". Collectors need to be able to get decent liquidity so they can make the next hopefully, bigger purchases which ultimately accentuates the brand. Same thing in housing except this is by zip code.

I do not believe that flipping creates "hype/demand". To the contrary, I believe that it damages the brand and drives away customers. Look at the number of the very recent PP 5524 available on chrono24 (almost 60 worth c. 3.5 M$ in total). While PP conveys the message that their watches are rare and sought after, the kind of watches you hand to your sons and daughters, the fact that there are so many flippers (because the watch is so recent, you can't really speak of second hand dealers) convey the message that modern PP watch values are totally artificial. It is a market that is oversupplied. So when I see this, I'm not really willing to leave 5, 10, 60 K$ on the table.

So I truly believe that Omega, as others, should pay more attention to the artificial demand and huge market they have created. It will hit back at some point. It distorts the real demand assessment. For Omega, the challenge is huge. Simply put: they sell 600,000 watches a year, they do not have any centralized customer data (yes, you could place 10 orders at 10 OBs with the same name, they would not notice) and the average qualification of Omega salespeople could be improved, say the least.

I am no American. But lets not get racist here. We are all watch lovers. And this is what unites us all. Irrespective of our skin colour, ethnicity or any other attribute that physically differentiates us.
I appologize if my comment appears racist. My intention was only to make a point about business practices in different industries and in different geographical regions, not about skin colour or ethnicity.

That’s why sold out doesn’t really mean sold out when one is able to place 10 orders at 10 OBs. 9 will become available when deliveries start to come through if the buyer only intended to buy one.

The initial hype of almost anything on the market does not determine the true market value. Whether it's a product/good, stock, etc, don't believe the hype. The prices always settle a few weeks or even months post release, before it slowly creeps back up when the secondary market dries. I understand that for a true collector, missing out on limited releases and potentially having to look on the resell market is frustrating, but we all want what we can't have. This is a double edged sword in a way because when you finally get the watch you've been chasing (hopefully for retail or a "good price"), it just feels that much more special.

However, this ripple in the water is meant for the people who don't really have the deep knowledge that true collectors do. The splash that is created by LE's might allow the average joe to take notice of the brand a bit more, which can be a factor in their decision when purchasing a watch, even if it's for a general production watch. This is a tactic that Nike and Adidas use all the time. Create something limited, publications are made, talk of the brand is spread and the average consumer is now influenced a little more when they decide to buy new athletic gear.

Only the true collectors and hobbyists know what is what, but to everyone else, it's just another product of the brand that they begin to see more and more. The more they see the brand being mentioned, the more willing they'll hop on the wagon.

I may be reaching here, or maybe not. You be the judge.

The orientation of the logo is fairly random. Given that it's basically invisible, I'm not really bothered if it's "straight".. 😀

Basically invisible...but straight, sort of.😗

Just got word that my speedmaster arrived this morning at the 5th Ave OB. I will be getting it from them in the next 2 days as I am away for work but super excited about this piece as it is my wedding gift from the future wife. This wait as has been well worth it and from the pictures I can tell I am going to fall in love with the watch.
