£5 Speedmaster

Yup, we all have stories like that. Perhaps the £5 speedie IS the karmic payback for missing out so many times.
I see this no different than someone who lists a pie pan Connie on eBay with “needs battery not running” in the description with a $50 BIN. If they had spent 2 minutes looking it up….
But, there is always the guy who PM’s the seller to let them know what they have, and the listing disappears and is relisted at $2k….nobody likes a hall monitor.
Funny. I was the only bidder on a “Seiko watch, not running, needs battery” in the US. What with exchange rates, the Pitney Bowes extraction fees etc I paid A$250 for a totally original, early 6138 waterproof marked UFO Automatic. The back had never been off and my tech said it was the most original one he’d ever seen. Not a $5 pick up admittedly but described properly that would have attracted the attention it deserved and a more appropriate price.

Oh, and the seller sold third-hand clothing. Lol

Ignorant American question here: what, exactly, is a car boot sale? I picture it as a flea market type sale held in a parking lot where the vendors have their items strewn about in their car trunk with the back hatch opened up. Am I close?

You have it surrounded. The more organised regulars might have a couple of portable trestle or card tables for their junk, a sun umbrella in case it’s hot, and a couple of camp chairs so they’re comfortable. Also known as garage sales or trash & treasure markets

Of course if it’s in the UK they don’t worry about the sun umbrellas …

Amazing find for $5. I don't know a lot about speedmasters but how much is this watch worth?

The ethical question.... you're walking around on a small flea market. And suddenly you see a 2915 for $ 10. What do you do? Tell or not tell? And if we would discuss this in a class full of kids... What would we tell them what you should do in such a case?

Oh dear, what would I do?
This is why everyone hates moral philosophers. 😁

I think that an air cooled 1972 911T is worth $6K, because that's what I saw one being sold for 25 years ago when it was parked along the side of the road in Tucson, AZ.

I can’t recall ever actually seeing a seller at a boot sale actually selling from their boot (trunk). Almost all sell from tables erected a few feet from the back of their car, or at the very least have a blanket on the floor with their quality goods on display.

Apart from transporting to site, the only time the boot is involved is when a seller first arrives and the early birds swarm around to peer in the windows before it’s unloaded to see what kind of gear they have for sale.

I offered 150$ for a collection of 1973 Nikon gear: F2 body, 5 lenses, lots of filters and other paraphernalia. Seller dropped his jaw, stuttered "allright!" and went back into his house with both arms in the air, waving the money at his wife.
The next week, I had recouped my expenses on the filters and one lens. So you might encounter some cases where both parties have the genuine feeling of having made a steal of a deal 😁

Firstly, congrats - it’s a beauty!! I’m beginning to think that yes it’s up to the seller to educate themselves when selling publicly. Finally, you have to wonder about the previous owner and how such a watch ended up being sold for £5. There’s always a chance it was stolen at some stage.

I am genuinely shocked that finds like are still happening these days. Around here people selling stuff always think they have the Holy Grail and price it accordingly. If I had a dollar for every $200 vintage Timex I saw I could afford to buy a $200 vintage Timex.

All I see these days are Micheal Kors, Kenneth Cole and Invictas on tables for $200- a timex would be great!
