40 mm vs 42 mm

I have a 42 mm LE Speedy and love it. I have found 40 millimeter speedy that I really like on the internet. The local Boutique does not have a 40 mm Speedy to try on and honestly I'm a little uncomfortable using them to buy a watch elsewhere. I don't think it's the same trying on some other 40 mm watch to compare but that may be the only option. Is there a much of a difference between 40 and 42 mm on the wrist?....

How large are your wrists?

If my own experience is any guide, I'm 6'4" with 7.25 wrists, I've found that I keep downgrading to smaller and smaller watches. 42mm watches wear much bigger. Most of my watches are 36-38mm now with the exception of a Cartier Tank on the small side and a Ploprof that I actually use diving.

2mm 馃槜

A lot of times it鈥檚 the length of the watch that is a issue for smaller wrists. Are the lengths the same ?

What other watches do you have? Do you ever wear sport coats / suits / or more of a t-shirt kinda guy?

Multiple dress watches. If it's business I'm wearing a dress watch. The rest of the time it's casual and Speedy or a variety of other watches ...
Dive,tool...some fun watches

The 40 mm Speedy would be my main beater

Ah, okay, for a beater / weekend watch I might go as high as 42mm. I've found myself to be much more sensitive to thickness relative to diameter. Used to own a Datograph up/down and the thing drove me insane, flipped it. Used to own a Rolex Deepsea, same problem, flipped it. Ploprof doesn't give me the same issue, for whatever reason. That said, if I have to choose between a 42 and a 40 of the same watch I will always go 40. As I get older I've started to find the larger watch trend a little, I dunno, obsene maybe? I might be in the minority there though.

Very interesting. I'm wearing the 42 and it is quite comfortable for me. I also I am sensitive to thickness so to me the 42 might be easier to wear than the small watch with the same thickness. There lies my worry about getting a 40 with the same thickness .

That is entirely possible. The datograph would have likely been fine at 42

which 40mm speedy? A date/reduced? or a non pro case? An 861 in a non pro case wears basically identical to a pro, as the bezel is the same diameter which is the bulk of the visual size...

date's wear smaller, and reduced wear smaller.

Wrist presence is far more important than a couple of mm

I tried on a Speedy FOIS (39.7) and then a Speedy Pro (42). It didn't look or feel like much of a difference to me. The Pro is very comfortable to me on my 7" wrist.

That鈥檚 a racing, same case as my date. Those wear much smaller then a pro (42mm). I鈥檓 not a fan of it on my 7.5 inch wrist. Feels small at least to me. They have angled bezels and for some people they are great.

Because it鈥檚 basically just the pusher guards being removed as the difference, same bezel.
