3861 Winding Direction Hard-Stop

I recently purchased a new Speedmaster Sapphire Sandwich with the 3861 (thanks @mdgrwl), and had a question regarding winding.

Everything I have read indicates that winding direction does not matter (e.g. CW or CCW), but I’ve noticed a couple things that I was curious about:

1.) Winding difficulty seems higher CW than CCW, is that expected?

2.) When winding CW, I wind until I hit what seems like a hard-stop where the resistance sharply increases, but the crown will still turn CCW with very minimal effort. Is there a reason for this?

3.) When winding CW, each wind results in a slight reversal CCW (e.g. 1/4 turn or less), which I’ve read is perfectly normal. However, if I wind CCW, I do not see this reversal (e.g. CW), is that normal?

CCW won't result in the mainspring being charged, CW is the only correct way, all other things you encounter when winding CW are normal.

It only winds one way ---- CLOCKWISE, do it until you physically can't turn it anymore. Turning it CCW does nothing but wear out your thumb and index finger.

Thank you for the quick replies! That makes total sense now.

One more question, the winding action seems fairly stiff. Is this just because the watch and the seals are new?

If so, will it become easier as they break in?

My new Speedy was stiffer to wind straight out the box than I had expected. 3 months on and I don't notice that slight stiffness now...

But, I wouldn't have described it as 'fairly stiff'...
