3861 issue? Minute sub dial jumps when clapping

Hi gents - I’m a new Speedmaster owner & forum visitor.

At my son’s soccer game, using the chronometer to track the game clock, I’ve noticed an issue.

After starting the chronometer, and after 15 minutes having passed on the sub minute dial, I applauded for the team. Looking down I realized the minute dial now showed only 10 minutes having passed.

I replicated the issue - clapping my hands vigorously in applause causes the sub minute hand to jump backward.

This is a brand new watch. Is this normal, or should the chronometer be able to withstand vigorous hand clapping?

Thanks for your feedback & insight.

Graham

It can happen if the spring holding the minute counter wheel is not adjusted properly. It can be adjusted. This has been discussed recently here.

Wow, how can you even see a watch dial while clapping. We have some observant folks here!

Minute counter reads X, you clap, then the counter reads Y. If the difference between X and Y is greater than time elapsed while clapping, then there’s a clear problem. Seems straight forward to me.

So you have two watches so you can compare (the scoreboard I'm guessing)?

I typically only clap for a few seconds at a time, so if the minute counter jumps several minutes — especially in a backwards direction, as in OP’s case — then I don’t think a second time keeper is really necessary. But YMMV, I guess.

Correct, minutes elapsed reads ~20. Applaud for a few seconds, look back at the watch, now reads ~10 elapsed.

The main dial & second hand are not impacted - only the minute hand on the subdial. Very easy to notice if you’re using the clock to keep track of time elapsed/remaining in a soccer game. One minute it says there are 10 minutes left, applaud for 10 seconds, look again and it now says 20 minutes are left.

started my 3861 and grabbed it with left hand and banged it moderatly against my left hand and it didn't seem to move. I didn't do it lightly but not super hard either.
