Anyone managed to buy a 2998 recently? It seems they are very thin in the market and I haven't seen a "private" one come onto the market for a while. I have seen one or two collectors selling on here, but otherwise it is left to the dealers to present what they have, which for the most part are pretty poor, with one or two expensive exceptions. Have the OF members hoovered them all up? A 2998-61 recently acquired
Not me, and I look daily. You would think I'm exaggerating. I'm having the same exact experience. Btw, that -61 one looks familiar. Excellent pickup.
I picked up my -4 a few months ago. I think @photo500 might have acquired on lately, like a week or two ago.
I haven't bought a cal. 321 speedmaster in over 2 years but have continued to follow the market closely - constricting supply with rising prices. By my rough estimate a 100% increase in price for the 2998s over the past 2 years or so.
There's a -5 on ebay, http://m.ebay.ca/itm/OMEGA-Speedmas...2998-5-1961-SERVICED-Omega-1474-/121669483692Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
The seller uses the byline 'simply the best, 100 percent authentic'. Arethey referring to themselves or the watch?
I always wondered why they can't put the parts in a neat little plastic container with separated compartments like those hobby bead kits instead of throwing everything usable or not all together.
This is a reference I have never liked or understood. No space heritage, problems with a somewhat poorly sealed case, radium dials through -5. If I am not mistaken, in the past twenty years about one out of five pre-moon Speedmaster sent for service was a 2998. From this standpoint, a relatively uncommon bird.
The 2998 is the first Omega ever in space, worn privately by Wally Schirra on the Mercury Sigma 7 mission in 1962 prior to the first NASA acquisition of 105.003s for Gemini.
