Was optimistically watching this auction today on today on the basis that no one else showed! 2998-6 in reasonable condition.

I never got started as those pesky bidders showed and it was soon at £15k where it ended but wasn't sold? So with premium that's nearly £20K and they wanted more, gulp. Presume withdrawn as the reserve must have been the same as the estimate 16-18K?

Will just have to day dream about 2998 from now on and admire the ones you have. :)

Am I the only one who thinks that such a price for that piece is really ridiculous? Or am I just hopelessly out of touch with the market?

$29,000 USD (fully loaded) and it was not accepted? Wow.

    Does seems out of control.

Nice watch, but unwarranted value escalation; 6mo ago this was a $15k USD timepiece. We all know what happens when "bubbles" emerge in markets. Keep your powder dry.

Ah, now that's a 2998 worth considering (I would prefer if they offered more pics so i could evaluate it more). I would've kept it a secret too, though I have no lucky buying pieces from the UK. Currency is just too strong.

I think @watchyouwant is dead on.

For every 2998 there are many, many more 6263's on the market. And most of these 6263's are held with dealers.

I think 2998's (if correctly appointed) are still a bargain.

What I have seen is quite a lot of masquerade watches. Those that have had a lot of parts pushed together by "dealers" with service hands, wrong bezels or even cobbled together movements. If you wondered what happened to Seamasters and the empty 2998 cases in the last few years, this is it.

I built one myself. This watch has a Seamaster 19m movement and has omega supplied service hands that are all quite wrong by today's standards. But imagine an unscrupulous seller offering it with "looks original to me" or similar deceitful claims.

...and a bit of a blue bezel ? When I built it the bezel cost me $100 because it was worn and , er, blue!

I agree with both Spacefruit and watchyouwant. Pricing over the next few years is going to be essentially controlled by dealers (and matched by the odd collector that parts with theirs). For less/the same as a Daytona, give me the 2998 every time. Better history, better movement (IMO), and more unique aesthetics.

@Spacefruit I agree with you. I even said what you pretty much said a while back ago on another thread

But in my case, I already have my grail speedy and I don't own a Daytona yet (another grail). So in my case, I would really love to own the 6263. While it is true that I can buy a 2998, keep it and resell in the future, my not-bottomless watch budget will be stuck in 2998s. I've been following 6263s and they have gone up in value too. Last summer Hqmilton had a decent 6263 for 30k. Right now they are selling a not so nice example for 37k. While its true that the price doesn't appreciate 40% like the speedy, a 15%-20% on a 30k++ watch is still a huge appreciation. It's actually not very easy to find a nice 6263 anyways. There are some selling them but the good ones are swiftly sold since there's so much demand for it. The leftover ones are not good and commands a high price given its condition.

@ChicagoFrog : I agree that the 2998 has better history and movement (don't mind either one) but I would still pick the 6263 for pure aesthetics. That watch is just perfect for my personal taste. How can you not like it? ::love::

I love both omega and rolex. But you know how it goes... the neighbors' grass is always greener ::bleh::

    I agree with @Spacefruit and @watchuwant

And: Rolex 6263 (and any other model) are very easy to fake. A friend (specialist in Rolex) showed me faked Rolex-parts (dials and hands) - very, very hard to detect! My opinion: A very big percentage of sold vintage Rolex are not 100% authentic!

A very big advantage of vintage Omegas is the extract...

Except when you can't get one, as is the case for 2915's and 2998's

Is this the case for all 2915/2998?

That's a good question! I have not been able to get one for any of the 2998s I have. I don't have a 2915 to try with, though I'd gladly take one as a donation!

Christies seem to be able to get them.
I guess they have an "arrangement" with omega that we don't.
recent speedmaster sale had extracts for several references that I can't get extracts for.

Of course personal preference is important but for every 20 nice 6263s there is 1 nice 2998. The ratio for 2915s is more like 200 to 1. I think this tells you the 2915s and 2998s are still significantly undervalued and certainly much more difficult to find.
