I randomly have a friend who knows I like watches tell me, "Dude, you need to check Goodwill.com!" thinking they will be priced like you're shopping in the store. Nope, prices on the items I've watched so far have gone higher than a similar auction on eBay, probably because there's less "supply" on the site so the good pieces get ALL the eyes on them.

The people at Goodwill must be freaking out.

Not as much as when an OF member bought for 5 dollars a rare Jaeger LeCoultre Deep Sea alarm that was worth 40,000 dollars, making headlines all the way to the New York Times.

He actually found that in a Goodwill Store. And it was more like €5 ($6), plus tax.😀

Their auction site had been around for several years before that. I have found that nicer watches taken to auction frequently sell for well above retail there.

I believe that in the years since, many of the Goodwill locations have been given better instructions on what brands to look out for and send to the national auction site.

Wait a minute! You can't just drop that casually into conversation like that. Do we know details? Is there a thread?

Edit - copying @STANDY 's research from another thread:

Here is the thread

Handling price = $3.50? That’s crazy, there’s no way I’d pay that much 😉

Also, I keep imagining the bids going up $1 at a time...

Damn, 24k seems way over priced. Sometimes there are some bargains to be found there though. Expecially Movado’s which seem still a bit under the radar there.

Based on what my watch maker has told me these dash 12’s do not have interchangeable parts. He had two movements on his bench, trying to make one serviceable movement, and they just weren’t compatible. Even if I had the money (which I don’t) that would make me hesitate before dropping serious coin on one that appears to be in rough condition.

Look at the auction now - appears to have been several bid retractions as the top price is now $15K

That’s interesting, has he seen several then?
That seems very typical of even other Longines movemekts though. They kept tweaking and improving and introducing tiny variants, making it a nightmare to find correct replacement parts.
My watchmaker is now even boycotting some of the smaller movements because he can’t take it anymore. I had to beg and plead about the historical value of the last one but I’m now officially on notice.

He has seen several. His impression, at least based on my understanding of the conversation, was that the dash 12’s in particular were a bit of a parts bin special from Longines. An individual watchmaker would modify the movement, hands, etc to produce each watch. Because of this, no two are exactly alike. For instance, the hands on the two movements he had were not cross compatible because they had different diameters.
