It’s an April fools joke on the other hand this cash grab is 100% real.

cool they did a unique escapement but they could have done it on a less ugly timepiece.

I like the case and the bracelet, not sure how I feel about the fluted bezel, and don't particularly like the dial and hands

The fact that it’s a 36,000 vph movement is quite interesting, more so than the escapement per se for me at least. I guess they’ll spend the next 12 years drip feeding this new movement to every other model in their product range if it works.

That IF will be interesting to watch as going hi-beat, ultra-thin, and running a novel escapement design all at once sounds like a movement that could have some teething issues.

Well considering the disaster the 32XX models were, it's probably good they take it slow.

OK it might not be… Hodinkee and Fratello have just dropped articles.

Teddy has numerous examples in hand. If Rolex developed an entirely new model in multiple variants and sizes and precious metals along with a completely new movement and escapement, that would go down as the most involved April Fools joke in history. Perhaps they'll even start selling it to make some of the money back on the joke. 😜

On a serious note, my initial reaction was yuck but having watched the video on it, my opinion has softened. I immediately liked the case and bracelet. I even like the bezel - this is a good Rolex styled take on an integrated model, with a number of callbacks to vintage models without literally just re-releasing a vintage case. I like the hour markers with the modernised Explorer 6 and 9 and their old indices design making a comeback, but with that cool open ended lume going on. Mark my words everyone hates this right now but in five years everyone will be raving about it.

The movement seems awesome. Sub 10 mm case, hi-beat, long power reserve, new escapement technology, lots of modern materials, looks great, superlative accuracy... Omega should be taking note. They need to sort out their thickness issue and get Spirate out en masse. Obviously this movement is unproven and their 32xx reliability has been poor, but if it proves to be reliable I'd have a much harder time arguing Omega are doing a better job on movement technology now.

The only part I don't like other than the fact it's probably unobtainium is the dial. I don't hate it, but it is a bit messy looking. They're going for a sharp, modern design but I dunno - the boxy writing areas and cluttered shapes just look a bit average. Plus I hate the cyclops, but I hate all cyclops and that hasn't stopped Rolex before.

Finally the name... Land-Dweller is such a lame name. They could have done much better. But then a lot of people think Railmaster is a shit name too so horses for courses.

Land-Dweller definitely sounds derogatory or an insult rather than aspirational or inspirational.
Mouth-Breather comes to mind as a similar phrase.

As an Army vet, I don't say this lightly, but Land-Dweller sounds like an insult hurled at land-lubbers by the Navy.

I do like skinny watches though. That honey-combed, tire-track patterned dial gives me vertigo.

Edit: this is a sweet watch. It looks like a proper luxury watch

I really want to see one of these stupidly named Land Dwellers for myself. Preferably while eating a PRX-80.

I think I like it, and I'll love the dial when there are more colors, but not the shiny strip down the middle of the bracelet.

Land-Dweller, or Planet Ocean ?

Planet Ocean - now that is a cool name for a watch.

FWIW, here's my take on the Land-Dweller:

Rolex has basically taken note of the integrated bracelet trend and come up with its own to get a slice of that market. It's an interesting piece which combines the trademark Rolex fluted bezel and cyclops with the case profile of a Tissot PRX or Royal Oak.

I like that Rolex have come out with an innovative movement which is very different from the 32xx series, so good on them. To me, this movement seems to have the same advantages as Omega's coaxial movements (no sliding friction) but the two wheels of the coaxial movement are laid out horizontally rather than vertically. So it basically does the same thing as the coaxial but in a slimmer package. Will be interesting to see if it's significantly more reliable than the 32xx movements. If it is, then the 7135 should be the start of a new family of movements to be installed in other popular models such as the Explorer, Sub and GMT.

Not a big fan of the honeycomb dial. Wish it had a dial similar to the blue motif dial on the Datejust. That would have worked much better. Either that or a plain sunray brushed dial.

And who came up with that name? I really thought it was an April Fools joke at first, as it sounds so pedestrian. Maybe it should have been called the OP Slimline? Sounds a lot more elegant IMHO.

Ground-Dweller? Tree-Dweller? Swamp-Dweller.... Nope, there's just no way to make it work 😂

The design team are a group of barrel scraping dwellers. How the hell will anyone know when it’s 3 o’clock without a giant 3 on the dial.

Now hold on here, let's not say things we can't take back. The 3-6-9 explorer dial is perfect

Not for me but tastes differ. What I wanted to say is that the 6 and 9 on the dial look odd without the 3. Even then I’m not a fan of big numbers on the dial. A datejust looks cleaner and better.

Oh, ok I do agree with you here. The 6 and 9 without the 3 looks weird to me as well.
