Or open up the budget cap and let Ferrari, Mercedes, and Stroll spend like there’s no tomorrow.
I think 2 out of 3 have already went over budget.

Best driver for sure but I really don’t rate Perez at all these days, especially compared to either McLaren or Mercedes drivers

Would love to see Piastri in Perez’s seat, his has been a quiet (in terms of media coverage) but very impressive season for a rookie. I reckon he’d be a challenge to Max, unless RB turned down his power 😉

Really looking forward to this weekend and perhaps the greatest of all racetracks, certainly my absolute favorite.

I have some thoughts on the cost cap:

I think the cost cap is significantly too low, in years gone by Ferrari Mercedes McLaren could have spent their way out of the predicament they find themselves in, by literally spending three to four times more than the current cost cap.
Nowadays I think we could add Aston Martin into that mix, as they are now very serious players, as opposed to their contemporary F1 predecessors i.e. Force India, Spyker, Jordan etc.

Probably the best example of this is Mercedes.
If like Mercedes you go down the completely wrong road, especially with the core foundations of the car, you can't rectify this within the season, there is just not enough budget to do this.

They would have to completely Re-design the entire foundations, even something as fundamental as placing the driver in the optimal driving position, that is to say significantly further back than Hamilton and Russell are currently situated, essentially everything then gets built around where the driver sits. If we look at the crane shots from Monaco, that car is hugely imbalanced, my theory is that because the fuel is also behind the driver, the lighter the car gets the easier is to get a neutral balance, and that's why Mercedes often get faster towards the end of the race, and are competitive usually during qualifying having very low fuel.

That being said some circuits do suit Mercedes characteristics more than others, so at times they appear like they've made a significant leap forward..

Any thoughts?

Makes sense on the cost cap. It's doing its job in stopping run away spending but an unintended side effect is locking in competitive imbalance similar to the old power unit token system. Once the tokens were scrapped, Honda was able to catch up to Mercedes and Ferrari. Something needs to be done on the cap.

The FIA has already shown the hard cap is really just a soft cap when RBR breached it to win a championship and only got a slap on the wrist. If I'm Mercedes, Ferrari, Mclaren, or AM, I'll gladly blow through the cap this year to have a competitive car next year if it just means a fine and a small reduction in wind tunnel testing.

Cost caps are keeping 1/2 the teams in F1.

pull them and F1 will go downhill. This thought is shared by all the team principals.

I don't disagree with the notion of a cost cap but it's significantly too low if you need to turn your season around, it's almost impossible unless you've got a great platform/foundation already that you just go about tweaking.

Revenues in F1 are increasing exponentially and fair distribution should allow for the cost cap to be significantly increased.

Exactly! And apparently, there are already three teams that have breached the cost cap for 2023, and we're still 10 races away from the end of the season; the breach of Red Bull last year with hardly any repercussions set a precedent, and would have given other teams the confidence to go ahead with any repercussions now being fully quantifiable.

Yeah, Eddie Jordan was (is still) such a great character, very funny and not always intentionally "he threw a bonsai up the inside" 😁😁😁
and a really nice guy, I've met him a few times; he used to be involved with Stowe School..

There still needs to be something done to make the field more competitive if cost cap is "locked". Maybe they could take away even more wind tunnel and simulation time based on team standings. As it is right now, RB will probably wipe the floor with everyone in the next 2 seasons after going undefeated this year.

The only problem with that is that Adrian Newey has a virtual wind tunnel in his head.. and I'm not sure how they would go about a Newey Cap? Maybe there's something analogous to chemical castration for geniuses??

Really? I'm hoping it's wet... But that wet that's exciting and drivable not that wet where they go round twice behind the safety car and call it a result!

It's such a great track that we don't need it.. There really should be great battles throughout the field..
Rain usually doesn't make for great racing, although it can produce unexpected and interesting results.
But Judging by the weather forecast, it looks like you might just get what you're hoping for..

Looks like rain will continue through the weekend. If qualifying can’t take place they will set the grid by championship order…

Except, so far, for Max as he’s already exceeded his gearbox allowance.

Also, the Team Principle & Sporting Director depart from Alpine (after Spa)

They (Renault/Alpine) gave Cyril Abiteboul 6 years or so to do virtually f*** all..
Otmar has been there for little more than a year, that's just not giving him a fair chance..
