Rare 1988 R serial Rolex Daytona Floating Porcelain dial. Very seldom seen with this dial configuration and made for a short time in 1988. In the mid 80s Rolex was struggling to sell the then unpopular 4 digit manual wind Daytona and looked to revamp the range. In 1988 they released the 165xx series of self winding watches based on the Zenith 4030 calibre movement. It is understood that Rolex was reluctant to produce these new watches in any great volume due to the problems selling the previous models. The outcome was that dealers couldn’t get hold of the watches and for the first time Daytona waiting lists started to appear and have never really gone away since. There were several models in the range and many different dial colour combinations, but the most interesting is the white dial with the black sub dial rings. This first batch of white dials have gone on to be known by collectors and enthusiasts as the Porcelain or 3D dial. Turns out after a long conversation with a few people on TRF I have underestimated just how rare the porcelain dial Rolex is. Mondani, has even said the price is wrong. I have opted to withdraw it for now until I can get a good idea of the correct selling price.
So, after confirming how rare the porcelain dial Zenith Daytona is, I have listed it at what I have been advised to by several Rolex collectors, dealers and Giorgia Mondani (Mondani Books) who has also confirmed its far too cheap. Current Market Value - £20,000 So on that note, My asking is £19500.
