It's so awesome to have this story come to light! Very excited to see them in their current condition and when the cosmonauts obtained them for use.

It's an amazing story how, in a time of détente between East & West, cosmonauts got acquainted with Omega after NASA and the Russian Space Agency agreed upon a joint Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1972... ASTP flew in July 1975.
1973 onwards, several cosmonauts visited Bienne - Switzerland and the rest is history. MoonwatchUniverse got first hand information from several cosmonauts, who although in their late 70s anniversaries, remembered the Omega timepieces well... great insights!
Both astronauts and cosmonauts continued to visit Bienne through the 1990s and we'll have a feature on this as well 📖

Anticipating anything some people might have heard, here's some in-capsule TV coverage of the Soyuz 25 launch showing, for the viewer, cosmonaut Valeri Ryumin & Vladimir Kovalyonok at right... 9 Oktober 1977.
Watch-related moments to check:
At 05:15 both Ryumin & Kovalyonok check their watches ( Sokol suit unpressurized as helmet is open )
At 17:12 Ryumin's watch is clearly visible in the foreground at left inner wrist and Kovalyonok's watch at the top of left arm ( Sokol suit pressurized as helmet is closed )

1979-2019 = 40 years Alaska IV LCD prototype or the quartz chronograph designed & selected for NASA...
Twenty prototypes were made, from which 12 were handed to NASA in order to be flight-tested onboard the Space Shuttle...
Do You remember: Who wants to play "Find a Speedmaster on a US EVA after February 3, 1974"
In analogy to this interesting topic, in which MoonwatchUniverse came up with the right answer and photos to prove it, we're launching a new challenge... as we would like to find some photos showing the Alaska IV LCD Speedmaster being tested by NASA astronauts onboard the Space Shuttle orbiter.
The first Omegaforums member to come up with such NASA images will get a FREE signed copie of the 2017 revised & expanded edition of the Moonwatch Only - 60 Years of Omega Speedmaster book 📖

Interesting fact about these Speedies = Omega Extract of the Archives comes with text " Made for NASA shuttle pilots "
So to make clear, we need a clear photo with official NASA number... showing the Alaska IV LCD Speedmaster being used aboard a space shuttle mission as I have been wondering for 4 decades about this

Owning one of the protoypes I've been looking for a pic since a long time now but nothing so far and I ran out of photographic resources to look at. Any special website where I could investigate some more pics ?

NASA photo archives are incomplete and they're currently working together with a few spaceflight aficionados who have been scanning and digitally enhancing their private photo collections... That has been the reason why I joined Omegaforums and started MoonwatchUniverse.
2019 will be an important year for Omega but their focus will probably lay with the Apollo anniversaries... not the Alaska Project
My offer remains: The first Omegaforums member to come up with such NASA images will get a FREE signed copie of the 2017 revised & expanded edition of theMoonwatch Only - 60 Years of Omega Speedmaster book 😉

Certainly looks like a 1969 tonneau case Mark II chronograph without the wording Speedmaster... Wonder if it would fit in the red outer case?

An interesting #SpeedyTuesday story to say the least !
The question remains if such a Mark II tonneau case would fit in the well-known red outer case of the Alaska Project ?
It certainly looks like that the complete history of the Alaska Project hasn't been told yet... and comes to us in snippets.
Some released by the Omega Heritage team, others pointed out by Omega Forum members...
About time this fascinating research project gets the full attention it deserves for its half-a-century anniversary !
