Hi all,

I need a dial check on this 1967 De Ville, I feel it may be redialled, whilst the case back also feels quite polished but hard for me to be able to tell with confidence.

The movement itself is in good condition at least and has been recently serviced.

Any and all thoughts welcome, apologise for poor picture quality!

Speedmaster? I think you mean seamaster. Nice watch, but the pictures make it hard to assess the thickness and sharpness of the print. If redone, then from the pics a nice job.

OMG two mistakes in the title... ::facepalm1::

Apologies. Do the dial look original and not redialled?

Here are close ups. The seller's website makes it impossible to save the photos so I've to rely on these lower res screenshots.

Price is £1,200, which I think is reason if not redial (happy to be corrected).

I don't see any of the typical redial tells, so unless it is 'wrong' for the reference in some way, I'll go with 'looks authentic' to me.

Otherwise, crown looks worn, case looks pretty darn polished (I'd expect sharper lug corners) though. Not sure this would bother me too much, but something to note.

The font looks heavy which is usually a redial tell but I think it’s the photos and the dial is original.

Gold cap, no bracelet, fairly polished - it’s a pass from me at £1200

The printing looks ok to me. 1200 GBP is over $1600 USD for a gold-capped SMDV, which seems about 2x what I would pay. Obviously, if you are buying from a professional dealer with a fancy website and a warranty, you will pay a premium.

A recent service has some value, but only if you really believe it was serviced, and done well. Most of these internet sellers just claim the watch has been serviced and hope for the best.

Thanks all, appreciate the comments. Not sure where in the UK these watches could be found for half of the price. I have yet to come across them at those prices anywhere, but I may well not be looking in the right places.

Yep, if you are looking at dealers or Chrono24, you will often be seeing 2x fair market value, we hear this a lot from new members. To get a better sense of FMV, I'd suggest researching auction sales, and prepare to be surprised. But it does take more knowledge and nerve to buy at auction because there are no returns or guarantees. The Private Sales section here is a very good place to look for great watches from collectors. Real bargains are usually found in person, by joining watch enthusiast groups and networking, or by constant vigilance at estate sales or thrift stores. The latter takes a lot of work.

In any case, you are looking at a very common entry-level watch model, so there's no reason to overpay for something mediocre.

Check your watch specks on eBay against SOLD items. That would give you a more honest market value. Preferably the ones with a lot of different bidders (which are not marked “prive ”). On Chrono and EBay there are a lot of happy thinkers or looking for that one fool in a decade to come by… 🤔
