I recently purchased a 1963 Omega Constellation black dial (see attached). The inside of the back case shows ref. 168.005_SP. What does 'SP' mean ?

In addition, I note the finish seems to be bead blasted. Not seen this before.

Any thoughts please ?

SP = SPECIAL = REDIAL

Wow, do you think so? What gave it away? I kinda found the dial pretty fine but definitely feel that we need more pictures from different angles to be sure.

I just did, interesting discussion. But to me it seems inconclusive, given that even the veteran OF members don't seem to fully agree on what SP means, no?
Sometimes life is like that. If you can solve it conclusively then feel free to try

That sounds like a lot of work. I think I’ll take a nap instead.

The painted white minute markers are not aligned with the metal markers.

Now that sounds like an interesting observation that slipped from my attention. My impression was that the photo angle wouldn't allow for a clear judgement but that issue is certainly not out of the table.

Almost certainly a redial, but it would be desirable to see a straight-on photo.

The listing makes no claim regarding dial originality - only that the dial is black (and that the pictures are an important part of the sales listing)

I'm afraid, I too think the dial is repainted - due to the alignment of the text and the quality of the minute haches -but a a good in-focus pic of the dial would help to assess the dial properly.
However, the text is done reasonably well and the case is pretty good, so the watch will still wear well on the wrist.

Odd that the caseback has no perlaging - don't think I've seen his before on a mid-60s dogleg.

Is the dot over the I missing? Marker 29 seems off. Pretty good redial I would say.

I didn't see the seller claim an original unaltered dial. Some buyer may not be too pleased.

It’s actually not a bad example for a redial.. but yeah too expensive.
