Hi All, I'm making my first foray into the wonderful world of vintage watches and I wanted to get your thoughts on both the valuation as well as authenticity of the following piece? The asking price for this watch is $850USD (plus shipping). Links to image are here: http://www.qualityvintagetimepieces.com/OmeSeaCenSecBD2TDSSfull.html Description taken from the site.. Would really appreciate feedback on whether you think its worth it. From an aesthetic perspective, this watch totally hits the mark for me personally so happy to pay a hundred or so extra if it is overpriced. Unless you could get it for free I wouldn't touch it, there are way better seamsters out there than that one. But thats my opinion. Also there is something with that dial, its quite small for the case or it is missing the bezel? Not sure….
Unfortunately, the repainted dial alone kills any value. Sellers will often proudly state that their watch has a "restored original dial", which, while probably true, is nothing to be proud of. Here's an example: Purchase an original Van Gogh Pour paint remover all over it and wait 15 minutes Run the canvas under hot water, and scrape away any remaining paint Do your best to repaint the same work. Be sure to use the original canvas! Sell it, proudly stating that it's an original Van Gogh canvas. Same thing here...
Poday! Thanks for making it 'real'. I do love me an original Van Gough tho! Any recomendations on where I could source a similar watch? The style (black face, silver bevel, minimalistic) really appeals.
I'm no expert, but finding a good vintage black dial that isn't refinished isn't going to happen quickly. I'd say your best bet is the sales forum here (anyone attempting to sell a redial would be quickly dealt with), and a big bottle of patience.
Without looking at the pictures two things raise red flags in the description..."Gorgeous polished case" and "Gorgeous refinished dial." (And not to mention the overuse of "gorgeous" in his description) No need to look further!
