Hi I inherited my great grandfathers watch from my dad at the start of 2013. This started a very expensive obsessions/collection, most extravagant piece bing my Sedna gold seamaster 300 which I absolutely adore..... Anyway I'm going off track. The reason for my post is that although my great grandfathers watch keeps time perfectly it has had its crown changed at some point in its life to a non omega crown. I am wanting to replace this for a genuine omega crown to restore it back to its former glory. I sent it away to Swiss time specialists to get a omega gold plated rice bead strap but this was rather costly was hoping to source the crown myself & take it to my local jewellers where I purchase my new omegas from. So my question is does anyone know where I could source a crown & what the part number for the crown that would fit my watch would be ? My thanks in advance

You would need the case reference number to find the proper crown.

Problem is. Most crowns made today are gold plated and not a great match for gold filled cases. Many on Ebay are selling new crowns as new old stock (meaning vintage) and they're not.

If your watchmaker has the Bestfit books (second book). He can look up the case reference (if listed) and can see the image of the right crown

    Movement could be a 601

Maybe a crown similar to this

Thanks for your reply don. Is the case number on the inside of the case back ? I seen the crowns on eBay & realised it was a minefield. I have posted a copy of the letter I received from Swiss time specialists when I had the strap replaced, is there adequate information here to decifer what crown I would need or do I need to open the watch up to get the information ? image.jpg

MD# could be the reference. It's on the inside caseback, but sometimes after a certain date. The numbers don't work with the Bestfit books as they only went up to a certain date.

Your movement as mentioned has the caliber 280 and these take thicker winding stems than most other movements. Tap 7, so you will need to find a crown that takes that size.

Personally. I would just leave the one that's on it. Finding a Omega tap 7 gold filled might be a problem. I'm sure from 1962 they were signed, but never found any in the Omega crown lots I've purchased. Never found a steel one. Had to buy them from my parts supplier

Swiss Times est. is a bit high (like really high)

    Hi junior...

First, the watch is a gold plated case, not gold filled, so a plated crown will likely look just fine. The MD number is the case reference, so it's a 20 micron gold plated case. The Omega replacement crown for it is part number 069SX35002. I don't know where you are located, but this should not run you more than say $30 US for the crown, of course plus labour to install and possibly a new stem.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers, Al

As it's a replacement cost estimate, perhaps this is for insurance purposes, rather than a market value estimate for a sale?

Brilliant Al. I will get on the search for that now. I'm in Scotland so will get online & see what I can find. Yeah I was always under the impression it was gold plated & not gold filled as the plating has actually rubbed of slightly next to the crown due to being would daily however as it was wound by my great grandfather & my father it just makes it all the more special to me. Thank you for your help it is much appreciated.

    Try CousinsUK.

    https://www.cousinsuk.com/

You will probably need to call them. Have that letter ready, as 14714 is the case reference number. As Al said, that's the number you are going to need to find the crown.

You may also need the "old" Omega part number to find the crown. It is LA35002.

This seller has one in stock:

    http://www.scotchwatch.com/Omegainventory.html

You'll need to search for LA35002 on the webpage.

    Good luck,

Hi I realise this thread is a bit old now but as it’s the first time I’ve been on here in sometime I thought I would update you on my progress. I bit the bullet & sent the watch away to Swiss time specialists to have the crown replaced. Costly but worth the peace of mind of having it done right.
