Without pictures of the inside caseback and the movement, the title of your post is all any of us will ever know.

You should take it to a qualified watchmaker and bring a digital camera with a macro setting.

It looks a lot like a pocket watch that someone's soldered lugs onto to convert into a wristwatch. Is the size large, like 48mm or more?

Looks like a WW1 era watch with cal. 13''' movement. Perhaps case reference 708 or 741. Hands look like a later replacement and have no idea about the crowns. The lugs though look like they are factory.

Thanks for all the replies. The date of 1920's was confirmed by relatives and the trenchwatch seems very similar. I am a bit worried about the soldering and the wrong hands but the size is 27mm diameter if that is significant. I will follow up the suggestion of taking it to a watchmaker to get it opened. I ccould come back with more info. or even go to the omega website where they ask for ref. numbers.

Following up gatorcpa's suggestioin I found a watchmaker to open the back. The number on the back plate is 5313576 and on the inside case 5603746. He couldn't find the cal % (whatever that is ) and I don't have digital camera so no more pictures. Am interested to know if this helps identification.

Serial 5,000,000 was in 1916, while 6,000,000 was in 1923 so yours would be probably earlier than 1920 based on the serial number.

Caliber would be found engraved underneath the balance wheel and is difficult to see if the watch is running.

No matter, as your watch is so old, few of us would be familiar with these calibers.

At least you have some information on your watch,

thanks dsio for the date info. Confirms the family history and caliber (gatorcpa) was the word I couldn't remember from the watchmaker/repairer. He said it was probably somewhere near the face and he did not want to dismantle it that much. From looking in ebay I estimate value around £250 Do you agree?

Honestly that's a tough call, its not a collector watch that I've ever seen a guy saying "I wish I could find one of those". The size also makes it a difficult sell, as its a bit small for a modern men's watch. The eBay listing above for $150 was probably in the ballpark.

Thanks dsio. I agree about the size and it's not suitable for a woman so it would only appeal to collectors. Keep your eyes on ebay.

Thanks Myvintageomega for that info. It does seem a very wide price range With your dealer's hat on could you give my watch your valuation? I notice the one you have is not gold.
