176.0014 TV Dial Queries

Hi All,

New member here and relatively new in the watch world.

I've been an admirer of the Speedmaster for a long time and a while back discovered the 176.0014 TV Dial and fell in love with it.

Even more recently I decided to buy one, from eBay, whilst doing as much research as I can into the 1045 calibre movement and the 176.0014 to try to ascertain if the watch is genuine. Being what I assume is a 1979 model based on the movement serial number, it doesn't have box/papers, but the sellers page was a fairly reputable watch page.

The listing quoted it as everything original and in good running condition.

I have just received the watch and am very happy with it but have a few questions.

1) This is my first automatic watch, but the watch wont start unless i pull out the crown to position 2 and push it back in. Is this normal? If not, what could the issue be?

Similarly, it will stop running only a few hours after i take it off. e.g. overnight

When I received it I did wind it a bit via the crown (as I'm sure you can do if it hasnt been worn for a while). But I'm concerned I may have dislodged something by doing so?

2) There is a small crack/gap along the outside of the case as if it has shifted over and I'm concerned that might compromise the movement?

3) Anyone had experience with the Omega certification/restoration services. I dont see myself ever selling the watch as its my first in what I hope to be a long collection but would want to ensure it lasts as long as it can.

Thanks all,
AD

Nice looking watch and I think a good find.

You can certainly give it a full wind (say 30 turns), but it looks to me as if the movement is a little dirty and needs a service.

Hard to tell from the pictures, but the crack just looks like dirt to me.

If you post your location, someone will no doubt be along with a watchmaker recommendation, if you need one.

Good luck with it.

Thanks, Nick.

I'm in Essex, UK so if anyone can recommend somewhere who could take a look, it would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe these photos will do the crack/gap some more justice. It definitely is dirty (I can tell the watch has lived a good life before me) but there is for sure a small gap between the TV dial and the case itself.

More concerned it risks some dirt/water/anything getting inside the watch.

Best,

If there's no recent documentation of a service from an OMEGA agent, it's going to need one. As long as you find an authorised workshop to do the work you'll likely be fine. This model isn't old enough to qualify for the OMEGA restoration service so it would simply be given the usual comprehensive movement and case service. You should be able to choose if you want the case and bracelet refinished or not.

Nice watch. I'm envious as would love a TV dial Speedy like this.

If you live in Essex then Simon Freese or Swiss Time Services would be recommended people to service the watch. I'm sure it will run much better afterwards and you can be assured that it is properly lubricated and worn parts replaced.
