Good idea to educate yourself further- plenty of resources here on OF

Start with:

And if you wish to focus on Constellation here is the best resource:

Good luck with the return, although Chrono24 is not like ebay but best to make your case before they release funds from escrow

Appreciate it

The seller seems to be ok with a return if I cover shipping. Chrono may disagree but we will see.

More confused about how I claim vat back on a rejected import. I need proof from a third party, so it seems the only way to do that is pay more money for authentication - the hole gets deeper

I would just pay the shipping and return it. It will be a small cost compared to purchase price you will be getting off light.

The shipping at VAT combined is close to £500..

But yes, I suppose a quarter of the value

You might have to jump through a few hoops and it might take a while but you should be able to claim the VAT back.
I don’t think you have to have an independent review of the watch - just proof of purchase, VAT charges paid, proof of export, correspondence with the seller and reason that the watch did not meet the contractual agreement. (I.e. the reason for rejection).

Best of luck.

It arrived, such a pretty watch. Will attempt my return this week. Definitely looks better in person, just can't get past the chronometre spelling as you mentioned.

In the long run you would realize that this example is of modest quality...

the lugs are rounded, the dial is full of spotting, the cross hair is too thick

IMO the hands and the crown aren't correct either

In the end it's up to you 😉

Agreed, I have submitted my request but it is a private seller on chrono (thankfully escrow)

I'd happily wear it, but he needs to knock 1/3 off so its priced at what its worth. Have a feeling thats unlikely 😬 So return it is. No doubt I'll be buying from one of the experts on here instead

the 'spotting' looks very much like 'pitting' which is unusual - but could be a result of the new dial finish over removed corrosion of the dial

Had someone in another forum suggest its repainted which seems the most likely answer so far

it is definitely, unquestionably, fully repainted. - dial and lettering.
and as @Passover suggests, the hands look suspect too -but they may be modern replacements. (the crown could be a service crown or an 'aftermarket' i.e. counterfeit, crown, as they haven't made these for a very long time)

If you look at an original dial, you will see the difference in the quality of the finish and the elegance of the script fonts.

I hate to sound so harsh but the finish and lettering are aberrations and hurt my eyes - so please send the watch back and eventually experience the delights of the real thing.

BTW - when you quoted the price of the watch (£2050) were you including import charges to you?
If so, then the watch is worth around 2/3rds of the sale price (£1,000 give or take) although I personally wouldn't buy it at any price.
However, if the £2050 was the sale price, then the watch is worth no more than 50% of the price.

Best of luck returning the watch.

Thanks, I paid £2,050 total. £50 delivery, £300 taxes (import) and £1,700 for the watch.

ok -so while the watch cost you £2050, the price was £1,700. (~$2280)
As I said, in collecting circles, this watch his a sub £1,000 watch - although the uninitiated may be willing to pay more (as you found out yourself).

Whilst no-date doglegs do sell for a bit of a premium, with some patience, you should be able to find a really nice original gold capped no-date pie pan dogleg for that kind of money - especially of you are willing to pay import charges on top of that and look internationally.

Agree with this assessment, even in the Uk market it’s a very sub 1000 quid watch.

It's not just the misspelling. The re-dial is not a good one. The lettering on "Constellation" is somehow managing to make me feel queasy. Return it. You will find a better example.

Have you tried agreeing with the seller to accept the return?

Oh well, it’s good that you tried that route first.

There are a couple of UK watchmakers on the forum who might perform the task for you.
You could try contacting them.

Managed to get a local omega specialist to do me a favour. Seller has agreed to reduce the price to £1,200 (plus the £350 I paid in tax) or return.

Leaning towards the return now, as much as the heart says no. Appreciate all your guys help.
