In fact, any modern Rolex reference is quite easy to source - as a simple google search will confirm. ::stirthepot::

True, at a price.

Thanks for all the replies. Lots to consider, but I'm sure my friend and I will agree on a path forward. A few things to note. It's my first vintage Rolex but I'm not new to vintage in general so no fear of me messing with it and hurting the value. As far as my friend's wishlist for a modern Rolex, he's mentioning all the usual suspects - Batman, Hulk etc. He's very new to watches and has been consuming YouTube watch channels with an obsession. So who knows where he'll finally land when he decides on something.

Another note just to be sure you understand:
If you take it to a jewelry store/watch repair and they polish the hell out of it, you will destroy its value!!
Consult here first.
@AAAKK has been here for 7+ years. If he hasn't figured out that by now he's gotta consider another hobby and forum. 😁

Just out of curiosity, given the collectibility and value of this watch, how was the price of $6400 settled upon? That’s expensive for a cheap watch, and really cheap for an expensive watch (if that makes sense).

I can personally vouch for the fact that @AAAKK knows what he's doing. 👍

Awesome find, congrats! 1980... birth year for me.
Buy out your friend for a fair price and he should be relatively close to his BLRO, Hulk, etc.

Please post pics after this is cleaned up regardless of what you guys do with it 😀

I would think the fair thing would be to give him 50% of the watch value (not what you paid for it) He found it, you offered to go 50%. That is 50%.

If you sold it for, let's say, 20g, that is 10 g for each of you and he get's his new watch. If you pay him 10g for it (minus the original spend) then YOU are getting a great vintage watch for 50% of it's value.

That is what is fair in my opinion.

An opportunity on short notice came to me today on this pc. Not something I usually chase and I'm far from an expert on these. A friend (complete watch novice) came across it from a estate buyer that he does business with. I thought it was a great price, so we ended up splitting on it.

Obviously lived it's life as a true tool watch, but to my eye it seems like an honest watch. Don't see any dial damage under all the crystal scratches. Back hasn't been off and the crown is seized and didn't want to force it. Watch runs for a bit with a light shake but wouldn't want to speculate on the movement condition. Rolex papers say it was sold in 1980.

I'd welcome any opinions. I thought USD $6400 ($3200 each) was a no brainer buy but let me know if I'm way wrong on this one. Thanks

Needs a light polish. I know collectors want it all perfect but you want to enjoy as well.

I get that some would freshen the case up a bit. But it won't touch a polisher while I own it. I like all the reminders that it was used as a real tool watch. If it ends up fully in my possession via an agreement with my friend, it will just get a new crystal, movement service and an ultrasonic cleaning.

Congratulations... you did great! I hate you. Box and papers big added plus. Yes, watch will need a major service and the bezel is worn. Do not send to Rolex. There are some wonderful Rolex watchmakers who deal with vintage, i.e., LA Watchworks, Phillip Ridley, Bob Ridley, and others. Check them out.

Here's a sold link from ebay to give you an idea of value. I would anticipate a little less, but not too much. Sold for 29,101.00 USD

[I realize I'm a month late to the party, but....]
This is such an awesome story. I always dream of finding something old and cool like this (for basement pricing) when I'm driving around on Saturdays and see the 'estate sale' signs in my neighborhood.
Any update on the buyout with the friend?

Just out of curiosity, given the collectibility and value of this watch, how was the price of $6400 settled upon? That’s expensive for a cheap watch, and really cheap for an expensive watch (if that makes sense).

Also interested to hear how they (the seller) came to that price. To the untrained eye, it just looks like a beat to sh*t Rolex. Maybe worth a couple grand. The fact they were slinging it for $6K at an estate sale means they recognized that it had some value...but didn't take the 5 minutes to do a google search to see what the actual value was? Weird...but hey, awesome find for you and your friend! 😀

+1 ^^^^ for this. I would leave it as is and do just the same. Keep the originality of it. Congrats on the great find.

At this point you are both aware of its value. Spend the cash, I’m guessing $1k max, to fix it up, No dial or case work! Sell and split the proceeds. Your buddy won’t take 3200 anymore.
