Unless it's just a fake, it prob was a mil one but all that value has gone now it has service (or fake) dial, hands and caseback. It's now just a Watchco. Note the issued watches would technically still be MOD property so I wonder if this one was deliberately made anonymous back in the day by a nervous soldier or sailor who didn't want to get into bother for having lifted it.

It might be a watchco altogether. The serial dates to 66 and the case has a screw down crown which came later so it is either a WatchCo or everything, including the case, was replaced on this one.

Well, not necessarily. The tube could have easily been replaced to accommodate the screw down crown. From these minimal photos, the midcase and caseback look vintage to me. I suspect it was just updated with service parts.

I can’t comment about the serial and the fixed bars. Could these just be long shoulder-less springbars?

Definitely fixed, I assumed it was navy issue and had all the elements marking it as MOD property removed. With no letter from archive available now it's not possible to even check the serial.

It sold for £3,800 plus 30% premium so £4940 which to me felt like a lot for a watch that had 'issues'

Did you see the watch in person? I mean how are you sure they are definitely fixed, it doesn't seem to state this on the listing.

Quite simple, I called them and asked.

Fair enough, it wasn't obvious from the page is all. In that case my earlier post about it being the real thing but changed out of all recognition is probably not far off the mark. It's lost any additional value it once had.

I agree, which is why I called them, it's amazing how bad cataloguing is at so called 'specialist' auction houses.
