Kelly Hunter @artofthewatch.com would be a great choice.
Thanks, I'll look into Kelly.

Great looking watch. I like the patina on both the hands and the plots. Another voice... don't polish the case, just service the movement of the watch and leave all else as is...

You asked about the value of the watch head... considering your watch is in good to very good condition, I'd estimate it's value at 4.5 - 5k... but, that's is just one man's opinion. It is an interesting story about the previous owner, but, I don't see that dramatically altering the value... if it had been worn by an astronaut... big difference.

I would try to document the original owner’s ownership and her role at NASA.

In some circles, that association, if documented, would be worth a premium, albeit not a huge one.

Very nice watch, btw. 👍

- Service the movement,
- Polish the crystal (they can be brought easily to 95% of new if not physically damaged and that's perfect for a watch like this),
- Don't touch the dial or hands (they look good and hopefully stay intact as they're removed for servicing),
- Leave the case alone (no restorative polishing but a good cleaning and a touch up is okay)

The only choices left to make is to replace the pushers and/or crown or not. I would because I wear my watches. There's a chance they won't need replacement because they seal the case properly as is or the case could be damaged (corrosion) and it won't make a real difference replacing them. Your choice and opinions vary strongly.

Thank you for the recommendations, I was thinking of doing exactly what you said except with the crystal. Is there a down side to just having it replaced?

I’m going to have the crown and pushers replaced . This one is being worn, really can’t see it being tucked away in a box or safe.

Not really. It's surely all in my head but the older crystals just look "nicer" to me on an older watch. They age over time somehow. It belongs to you and you should do what you want. The above is what I would do with such a watch as yours and what I did with my 145.022-69 and 3594.50.

I appreciate this insights. It’s my first one this old and I

Thanks for the information. I am not looking to sell it anytime soon so the value was more for my knowledge. I really want to keep the watch as original as possible but want to have it serviced. I am likely just getting the movement serviced, crystal polished, and fitting nos 1171 bracelet. I am happy it has a story behind it but I agree that it doesn’t add significant or any value to the watch.

Nice watch and nice find.

As others already advised leave it alone other than a service but I would remove the bracelet as these cause damage to the case by rubbing where the end links are under pressure.

Very very nice... Step dials are the best! Good choice for this -71! Fully agree with previous posts: mouvement and glass, only!

I would leave it as is but I would remove the stretch bracelet that isnt original to the watch. Those end links which are spring loaded to fit multiple size lug widths will eventually dig and wear into the lugs. I would find an original Omega bracelet for it.

Sounds like an 1171 bracelet is incoming so that's taken care of.

Jeff, is that a new 1171/1 or a true NOS (or vintage) 1171 that you have on the way?

I believe it’s a NOS by the stamp. If it was the new one it would have the 1171/1 stamp....right?

I bought mine new from Ofrei in 2013 or so and it's marked 1171/633 and a 32 in a circle.

That 1171 just looks new(ish) to me. Not new, old (vintage) stock.

The 1171 started life with screwed links and trapezoid clasp logo, then went to the 1171/1 with pins around 1980 then back in name but not design to the 1171 sometime more recently. What you have there looks like the current 1171, the marks on the links look laser inscribed, that is a recent thing.
