Hoping you can help me make a decision....
I've got the option to buy 2 speedmasters..

1 is a 71 nice example with the but on a 1039 bracelet with 561 end links - which is from the earlier 321cal?
I can buy head only or with the bracelet
So if I went for this option - which would you go for...

The second is a much cheaper option.
1984 - Speedy pro (so still a 145.022 i guess?) but less desirable.
Although this one is significantly cheaper and is a complete set box papers - original receipt and 2 service receipts.

    Assuming I can't buy both...
which should I buy and if the 71 should I buy the older bracelet with the 561 end links

Or in fact should I wait and spend more time getting a complete original 71/72 with the correct bracelet?

    Thanks In advance

    1039 can be correct for a '71.

Condition would be a big factor for me. If the '71 is trashed and the '84 is mint, I'd go with the '84 all day long. All things being equal, I'd prefer the '71 on the 1039 bracelet. I wouldn't use the 1039 bracelet as a daily wear option, but having it completes the watch and is great for special occasions. Get a good strap to put on the '71 as your daily wear option.

thanks guys this is to be part of a collection worn in rotation - I tend to not wear anything more than a few days or a week at a time and when it's time for holidays etc (beach and pool) i'll always fall back to a more model piece like a Sub or my Polar ExpII

Have now had a better look at the 84 and it looks like it's had all the hands replaced at some time - they match each other but are too bright for the dial.

The 71 condition is 'good' though not excellent case is quite polished...

See repoman's post above. Given your description (and the obvious lack of pictures we love so dearly, or even the prices being asked), I'm thinking 1984. The hands won't hurt the value on this one. A soft (polished edges) -71 is better left to a buyer who is less condition sensitive. A -71 (with collectibility and investment potential) should be as close to factory as possible, unless the wear is honest, attractive patina.

    lets see if these work...
granted they're not the best images.

    Confused...
Not the OP, but is it the same watch? If so, wrong case back for a Moon watch from -71 or '84. Otherwise, I didn't think the -71 looked horrible from the front. Nice dial...So many things to consider...service history (presume unknown), condition of the movement, of the bracelet, how many links? Of those, how many stretch? Date stamp on bracelet?

right the case back on the 71 is this:
    IMG_3733.jpg

which I believe is correct for a 71?

I didn't think the 71 had only the Hippocampus?

I believe it has been serviced recently - but yes no other history
The bracelet is also stamped '71
so whilst perhaps not original to the watch is I believe from the same year - sorry no image from inside of case back.

There are two types of case back for the 71
    the traditional
    and
the most rare that I posted before

Outside is like moon phases 3450809 caseback ;)

Of the two, I'm leaning -71, depending on price. And Speedy prices are changing so frequently! Check speedmaster101.com for value suggestions.

I just bought a really nice 71 from a very reliable and well known source, and it was just under £2k

Very nice - good find - I saw that one yesterday when I was trawling back through the recent FS posts.

Well I've agreed a little bit more than this but am still happy and has the 1039 bracelet which could be valued a little more than the std one...
But I'm only about 10% over ish
