Just wondering what you all think. Is $125 a reasonable price for a new crystal for ref 14710 Omega Seamaster?

Tbh, I'd rather just send the watch to an Omega-certified watchmaker and get it replaced as part of a full service. From what I understand these crystals can still be ordered from Omega for decent prices.

This is the price my Omega-certified watchmaker is charging me. There was a bit of a mix-up, and the crystal was replaced when it wasn't really needed. If his mark-up is minimal, I will just pay it. However if his cost is $30, I'll make more of a fuss.

Edit: I realized the watchmaker was giving me a $100 break elsewhere, so all is good.

I just got an F300 back from my watchmaker. He said he was lucky to get the part he needed. I agreed. He does not have an account with Omega. He said prices are way up across the board, especially Rolex.

Hello Al, I hope you and yours are well. What do you attribute the rise in parts price too?

My mechanic told me about a newish Jag on which he had to do full rotors & pads (and the car had less than 40k miles). The labor was only $500, the parts were $3.1k! When the customer came in to pick up the car he was cringing as he handed the guy the bill, but the customer knew what to expect and said it would be the last Jag he would own.
These companies really know how to keep customers.

^^^^^^^!!!!!^^^^^^😡😡😡😡😡😲😲😲

The watch it is for is 60 years old, and they are starting to phase out support for the movement. So they may not be making more of these crystals. It may just be honest supply v. demand economics economics here, not blatant gouging. It might be gouging, but it seems like Omega is not too bad that way.

I really have no idea. As I’ve said before, Omega prices used to rise each year by a small amount, and it happened usually around the same time each year. These were modest increases that basically covered inflation and were pretty much across the whole range of parts.

A few years ago the way prices increased changed dramatically. No longer small and widespread, they seemed more specific so some things didn’t change, and others increased by huge amounts overnight. So I’ve seen some parts double, or even triple in price from one day to the next. Others have only increased a small amount, more in line with the old way.

I’ve communicated my displeasure to the powers that be here in Canada several times, but of course the prices are not set locally, but by Switzerland. I had a recent phone call with someone at Omega on another subject, and in passing brought up parts prices again. This person, without promoting from me, said essentially that he couldn’t believe how much they increased prices on crystals specifically, so in not so many words said it was crazy.

I said that it almost looks like Omega is trying to make parts so expensive that independent watchmakers can’t compete with Omega.

For me personally, it makes it difficult when someone wants prices up front. I service watches from all over the world, so if someone asks for pricing, sends me a watch, I get it apart, cleaned, and inspect all the parts, then the prices could very well have changed significantly in that time. I now have to qualify my relaying of prices to say that they are subject to change and basically tell people what I’m writing right here.

Cheers, Al
