Out of curiousity, what does a typical reluming job by James cost?
I paid around 50£ to have the hour & minute hands done. But you should get in touch with him, it's going to be more effective to ask him directly 😉

Sent him a modern dial to add some delicious vintage’esque charm... he put the new ‘fauxtina’ over existing lume which was more difficult than a normal relume when the surface is flat.

He’s a magician and communication is excellent!

Original modern Speedy dial:

Is the value ruined? 😉

That's tempting... Did you buy an extra dial and hands or did over the original one ?

What was the reason for doing this if it is easier to strip off the lume and start again?

I think you could remove just the new layer to recover the original lume if you wanted to ?

Great job though I would have left that lovely burnt orange of the sweep as is.

I bought a new Speedy in 2015 and had the dial and hands replaced with the Apollo 11 35th anniversary LE. It left me with a spare modern dial and hands. I don’t have a plan for when and how to use, but I will keep my eyes open for a decent case and movement with damaged dial and have it serviced and replaced with this relumed beauty.

😉

Wasn’t easier in this case as it was a new dial with perfectly adhered original modern lume. He explained that the existing lume removal would require scraping and likely lead to dial damage.

Personally, I like the ‘bubbly’ and ‘puffy’ lume look so opted for this approach.

James is great to work with, and he asks and explains very well in advance. He gave me full input to have whatever I preferred, but he explained the consequences and left it up to me.

I had just acquired a Speedmaster but with a service hands installed. Is it advisable to relume or keep as it is. Thanks

Looks good, but reluming hands with yellowish lume would make them look similar to the dial markers

What reference/year is it? You might be able to find original tritium hands for it. Your bracelet appears to be a 1171. I guess your speedy is pre 1993?

Try to find some tritium hands. This way your speedy will be period correct. I did the same for my speedy. Tritium hands from the nineties will not be as expensive as hands for a 105.003. You will probably have to be patient to find affordable ones.

Seems like a lot of effort and if the hands were taken off a watch it's probably because they had some imperfections. They probably wouldn't match the dial in any case. I'd relume them, it's only a colour afterall.

This is a prime example of the arguement for relume. The dial on the OP’s watch was clean but it was dull and lifeless due to the ashy colored lume. That relume will make it stunning and I think actually help the value (if disclosed) if he ever chooses to sell it. An unattractive dial, regardless of originality, will hurt the value of a watch.

Mine is 48277XXX and the extract said July 91. I'm guessing yours is closer to 92 than 93

Just curious as I had read is it true 1992 speedy would not have the omega logo on the plexi glass?
